Willy Loman

The American Dream is the idea that with hard work and perseverance, anyone can succeed in America, the land of opportunity.   However, as time went by, the idea of the American Dream came to mean working to buy material possessions, and no matter how hard someone works, there is always more to buy.   As people struggle to achieve the American Dream, companies downsize and fire people who have given their lives to that company.   Capitalism in America causes a very few people to gain wealth while the rest of society just continues to struggle. The unforgettable Willy Loman and his family demonstrate the dangers and downright destructive forces of capitalism.   Willy Loman has simply unrealistic expectations of his own life and his family members.   He does not face his own flaws and just cannot seem to get ahead.   Willy Loman shows the dangers of getting too wrapped up in the very values of capitalism such as the idea that money equals character and material possessions defines self-worth. As Willy continues to be unsuccessful, he feels more and more inadequate and depressed.   He is courted by the grand idea of the American Dream without understanding that it is almost unattainable for many.   He suffers from this system as well as his own inability to change the dream or to cope with the unrealistic nature of the dream.   Capitalism kills his American Dream. Willy raises his children by transferring his own unrealistic version of the dream to them in myriad ways.   Willy’s focus in raising his children is that they be both attractive and popular. By raising his children this way, they never learn any skills that will sustain them in life.   In fact, they learn really the opposite of capitalism in making the effort to get ahead. Biff, who thinks he is above it all because he is so popular and well-liked that he doesn’t devote any time to schoolwork and ends up flunking high school math.   He doesn’t make it up in summer school so he cannot go to college.   He actually ends up stealing from his boss, and is basically floundering in the world.   He, like his father, always has grandiose ideas about success.   Happy, on the other hand, turns out another way.   Happy believes that Bill Oliver (the boss Biff stole from) will lend them money for one of their half-baked plans about selling sporting goods.   He is completely unrealistic and has no ambition.   Happy is well-liked, especially by women, but spends all his time trying to â€Å"score.† No effort is devoted to actually getting a job or being self-sufficient.   Because Willy is so focused on the idea that his children will achieve the American Dream, he teaches them horrible values.   When Biff steals a football, Willy praises him.   When Biff flunks math, he ignores the fact that Biff cheated.   He pumps up their self-esteem so much that they cannot hold down jobs.   They cannot seem to stoop to taking orders from anyone.   And Willy cannot seem to avoid making these false promises to them. For example as he tells his boys, â€Å"the man who makes an appearance in the business world, the man who creates a personal interest, is the man who gets ahead. Be liked and you will never want.   You take me, for instance.   I never have to wait in line to see a buyer.   â€Å"Willy Loman is here!†Ã‚   That’s all they have to know and I go right through.† (Miller 33)   However, he is a salesman for the same company who lets him go without a second thought, as he becomes less useful to them.   Willy is not preparing his children for a world of capitalistic corporate downsizing and such. He pumps his children up for life but goes way too far in avoiding the truth.   When Biff talks about working for Bill Oliver, he says, â€Å"How the hell did I ever get the idea I was a salesman there?   I even believed myself that I’d been a salesman for him!   And then he gave me one look and –I realized what a ridiculous lie my whole life had been!   We’ve been talking in a dream for fifteen years. I was a shipping clerk† (Miller 104).   In this quote Biff summarizes the idea that Willy has filled them both full of hot air, to the point that they cannot even live in the â€Å"real† world.   Biff cannot even admit that he was only a lowly clerk and so he ends up getting angry and stealing from his own boss.   Willy has not allowed the boys to truly see reality. Another capitalistic idea presented is that everyone must work and work in this world to provide for their families, to keep them in the newest things.   However, people never really get to see the benefits of all their hard work.   As a society, most families are in debt for everything they â€Å"own,† and they never get to see the end product of that.   As Willy says, Figure it out.   Work a lifetime to pay off a house.   You finally own it, and there’s nobody left to live in it† (Miller 15). By the time Willy works enough years in his life to pay off the house and the stuff in it, the kids are grown and he is on the verge of retirement.   And as he says, â€Å"I gotta be at it ten, twelve hours a day† (Miller 37).   He works so hard to provide for his family but never actually gets to spend time with them because he is always working to pay for all that stuff.   In a capitalistic world, things are made to be replaced and to keep their owners paying on them.   â€Å"Once in my life I would like to own something outright before it is broken. I just finished paying for the car and it's on its last leg (Miller 36). The same idea is expressed again by Willy in talking with Linda about the refrigerator.   They are discussing the expensive General Electric which functions well versus the cheaper Hastings model that they bought.   â€Å"Whoever heard of a Hastings refrigerator?   Once in my life I would like to own something outright before it’s broken!   I’m always in a race with the junkyard!   I just finished paying for the care and it’s on its last legs.   The refrigerator consumes belts like a goddam maniac. They time those things.   They time them so when you finally paid for them, they’re used up† (Miller 73).   Like the products that are all around him, Willy is also used up himself, and his company will prove this by letting him go after his dedication all these years. The idea that everyone must work really hard and advance their way up the ladder in order to make a good living is also presented.   â€Å"To suffer fifty weeks of the year for the sake of a two-week vacation, when all you really desire is to be outdoors, with your shirt off.   And always to have to get ahead of the next fella.   And still—that’s how you build a future† (Miller 22). Ben and Charley are both presented as foils to this idea, and Willy is depressed that he does not live the lifestyle of either of these men, but he â€Å"missed the boat† so to speak.   These men both kind of â€Å"luck† into things as is often the case in a capitalistic society.   Many times, it makes no difference how hard one works or how liked he is or anything else; it is about being in the right place at the right time. People can be discarded in this capitalistic world when they no longer serve their â€Å"purpose.†Ã‚   Willy is fired after devoting his life to the company with the horrible epithet of capitalism, â€Å"business is business.†(Miller 80).     Willy has given his adult life to sales for this company, and when he is no longer â€Å"useful† to them, he is fired.   â€Å"[Y]ou can't eat the orange and throw the peel away — a man is not a piece of fruit!† (Miller 82) The Wagner Company has sucked the life out of him and then fired him, discarding him like a useless piece of orange rind.   â€Å"I don't say he's a great man. Willie Loman never made a lot of money. His name was never in the paper. He's not the finest character that ever lived. But he's a human being, and a terrible thing is happening to him. So attention must be paid. He's not to be allowed to fall in his grave like an old dog. Attention, attention must finally be paid to such a person† (Miller 56). Linda is making a statement to America here about the way workers are treated in such a capitalistic society.   When everyone wants to â€Å"get ahead,† humanity is lost.   Willy is a person, and he deserves to be treated like one.   â€Å"He works for a company thirty-six years this March, opens up unheard-of territories to their trademark, and now in his old age they take his salary away† (Miller 56). Humanity is lost.   Workers should have pensions for devoting their lives to a company.   As he says to Charley, â€Å"you end up worth more dead than alive† (Miller 76).   His life insurance policy left to his family will provide better for them than he ever could.   This again, is the sadness of many corporate lives when they have reached the end of their â€Å"usefulness† according to the powers that be. Willy even has grandiose ideas about his own funeral and his importance in this dehumanized world.   Willy has given his life for the business, and feels that his funeral will be spectacular.   All the people he sold to will be there.   People from all over New England will attend because he was so well-liked but in reality, no one attends—his family and Charley. In all, Willy Loman was destroyed by the capitalistic society.   Capitalism kept him working in a job to â€Å"keep up with the Jones’† he was able to buy all the things that society sells to us with the idea that they are indispensable.   He devotes his life to his job in sales, never spending much time with his family because he was always on the road.   In the end, what does he have to show for it?   Nothing.   His boys are not productive and suffer from false illusions of their own.   He kills himself so that his life insurance policy will provide for his family.   Arthur Miller provides this play is a kind of indictment on the way the world is progressing today, particularly America.   He provides Willy Loman as a sort of tragic hero who wants to hold to some of the â€Å"old† ideas but is continually beaten down by the new trends.   Capitalism kills the American Dream. Racial Achievement Gap in the United States Essay

The racial achievement gap in the United States is the educational disparities between various ethnic groups. It is more manifests in African-America and Hispanic. These ethnic groups happen because students of those race are more likely to receive low grade in school, on their standardize test, even drop out of high school and is less likely to even attend college. Each student is independent and gains more equal opportunities as the same as other student who they attend school with. Throughout the American history, the improvement of citizenship in the educational system is the continual process compare with the past, because the minority of the student is even more independent and is equal in the present. However, the unequal economic gap and the different of the individual ability that has led the achievement gap grow in American society today. Over the last couple of years the united states student had make notable in academic achievement but however the racial gap remain the sa me. The favorable academic achievement is necessary to help the student gain the equal access to the education. For most minorities the education would make them have the higher spending on effort, time and money. Particularly, some lower income family student who even give up their education due to financial problem, which lend them to lose the opportunity to accept the higher education. According to the article written by Sabrina Travernise, which quote â€Å"a study that found that gap in the standardized test scores between affluent and lower income students had grown by above 40 percent since the 1960s†. The racial gap testing is now double between the blacks and whites. From 2007 to 2009 the achievement gap for the majority still stayed the same. For example the minority students occupy the large ratio of the poverty student. In many of the lower income families, the student who usually spend much less money in tuition and some of them will still don’t really care abo ut how the education system goes. In situation like this many student have the much weaker academic competition than the students and making most of them get the lower average in the standardized test scores. As a result they are arranged together in the lower level class. Unquestionably they sometime separate most of the white students where they can’t share some of the knowledge with the other kids. Also according to the US Department of Education the event dropout rate is the percentage of high school student who dropped out between beginnings of one school year to the next. Lacking of the educational resource is the most common factor which produces the difference on individual ability between the minority and the white student. Both the family and the school play the essential role in affecting the development the student’s ability. As a presence of the investigation, the children usually have the better IQ number in the good home environment. The difference of the individual ability between the minority student and the white student that makes the achievement gap increase. In today educational system, the student is separated from the different program and school according to their academic degree; this is also the unequal treatment among the different races of students because it never creates the equal opportunity to the lower- GPA minority students. For example, many lower level class students are only taught to use the simple academic skill in class, and then their ability won’t promote in the faster rate. In addition to their natura listic interest are usually ignored due to the less education resource when they are distributed to them. As a result the student won’t have the good prospect in future even if they are educated. The teaching quality and the outcome of the educational resources that both of them have the direct relationship in affecting the achievement gap. Therefore we should make more efforts to improve the current educational system. The educational inequality is differentiating the social class in America. In today’s society, earning the college degree or accepting the higher education have become the foremost condition in finding the job. However, the educational inequality affects the occupational success of people. The most obvious evidence is that the lower income workers have a lot of financial problem. In 2011 72% of African American student structure does affect their educational goal and expectation also they growing up in a single parent homes on educational attainment and success. The government and the people have the responsibility and obligation to aid at the weak group of people. Most Hispanic who is immigrating to American only sees to themselves a high school diploma, where they think it a sufficient amount of schooling. In summary as the circumstances that is placed above, the development of the American economy depend upon the development of the American educational system, which has also the essential impact to people’s life. Therefore, the government should continually improve the rule of educational system. Creating more opportunities and distributing the more educational resources to the minority student no matter how their individual ability is.

Stonewall Riots of 1969

Introduction The stonewall riots of 1969 happened consecutively for 3 days, it all started on June 27th in Greenwich Village, New York at the Stonewall Inn. During the 1960’s it was common for the police to raid gay bars, and when this would happen the gays and lesbians would try to sneak out the back door. The police would arrest the patrons and drag them off to jail, their names were written down and published in the newspaper by the next day and as a result they would be fired from their jobs. â€Å"The 1960s was a time of revolution. The Civil Rights Movement was in full swing and people took to the streets to protest the war in Vietnam. It was only a matter of time before gays and lesbians stood up for their rights as well. †(A history of Gay and Lesbian Pride) June is now the month known as Gay Pride month, a time when all gays and lesbians prance and parade to celebrate. Setting/Background Living in the 1960’s as a gay and or lesbian was very difficult in f act the only way to be safe was to be â€Å"in the closet†, not openly gay to the public.Police took it up as their duty to arrest gay patrons who were seen kissing each other, dancing with one another, or even holding hands with one another. â€Å"Generally just being present was enough in their minds to warrant an arrest. Of course when this appeared in the newspaper they were tabbed as having committed a Crime against nature. †(The history and impact of the Stonewall Riots) Issues Involved/Causes During the 1950’s – 1990’s gay couples were not allowed to touch or dance with one another; it was also illegal for women to dress up in men’s clothing and men to dress in women’s clothing. If three known homosexuals were sitting at a table together then it would be illegal to serve an alcoholic beverage to them. â€Å"If the gay’s didn’t comply with the laws then they were faced with a fine, a night in jail, and the next mor ning they would have their names printed the daily newspapers and have a record under criminal activity†. (The history and impact of the Stonewall Riots) Event On June 27th police raided a gay bar in Greenwich, New York at the Stonewall Inn.Police demanded identification papers from costumers, they escorted them outside on to the sidewalks were they were pushed off and others were put into a paddy-wagon. That’s when some of the lesbians and gays started to fight back. They Chanted â€Å"Gay Power† all while throwing bottles and rocks at the police. â€Å"Riot veteran and gay rights activist Craig Rodwell says: â€Å"A number of incidents were happening simultaneously. There was no one thing that happened or one person, there was just†¦ a flash of group, of mass anger. (The stonewall riots-1969) Crowds soon began to grow outside the Stonewall Inn. Every time the police would have the crowd spilt up it would just start again right behind them and again they would start to chant. Thirteen arrest had been made on the first night of the riot many of the protesters were singled out and beaten and then later were arrested. With about two thousand protesters and only about four hundred police officers, the tactical patrol force was called in to disperse the riots but with a failed attempt the riot continued on.Outcome/Effects/Aftermath Effects of the Stonewall Riots were that the gay community in new York united in the fight against discrimination and June became known as a gay month to celebrate their pride in homosexuality. The gay liberation front was organized. Gay people learned to take a stand for themselves and to fight back. Reflection Though gay issues are still a problem today in America, the Stonewall Riots was the first step toward uniting the gay community to start taking a stand for what they believe is right.I believe that if it wasn’t for the Stonewall Riots then life for gays and lesbians would still be the same as it was then. It was the Stonewall Riot that led to gay liberations and for the gay community to start working together to make life easier for them. I don’t believe that the police should have gone as far as they did with raiding gay bars, but it was there ridings that led up to the Stonewall Riot so actually I’m glad that they did that otherwise the gay liberation front may have never been formed.

Bachelor Thesis on Marketing Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 7000 words

Bachelor Thesis on Marketing - Essay Example When network marketing is introduced the it makes the customer to remember the ad, billboard or any other visual display he viewed regarding that product. Then it makes double impact on him as the situation contains both the effects of mouth publicity(by network marketing volunteers) and the impact of the visual advertisement. This gives a higher probability in making the customer buy that product. It is an important idea or a combination, whatever we may think, which is worth enough to contemplate and to do research about it on any background like that of a major in graduation of Post Graduation. It is innovative and important because it involves both technology and strategy while executing the idea. The approaching and methodology itself makes it to stand apart from the other ideas and strategies. This method involves the skill in applying technology in visual display and strategy in improving network for marketing. History of our planet proves that adapting to change is the only way to survive. Those who do not or cannot adapt, become extinct. This is true of plants, animals (including human beings) and even brands. Brands that do not change disappear from the marketplaceand the consumer's mind. In the recent years the pace of change has increased manifold and consequently the time available to adapt to changes has shrunk considerably. The problem with many of us is that we think of future as faraway. The future is here. It's not some event that will take place five, 10 or 20 years from now. It is something that is as close as tomorrow. The pace of change in the recent years has shortened the distance between yesterday, today and tomorrow. In preparing brands to survive into the future, it might help to look to the past and see how brands have evolved. The first real "brands" began to emerge at around the same time as marketing began emerging as a serious business management discipline way bac k in the late 19th and early 20th century. By the mid-1900s, marketing had already established itself as a central business function and the four Ps became the tactical tools of marketers. Over the next 30-40 years, marketing as a strategic business function has evolved constantly to adapt to continuous and discontinuous market changes. Concepts such as segmentation, differentiation and competitive advantage emerged and proved extremely useful to marketers in successfully introducing and establishing brands. But things have been seem to be changed from the last decade. Technology and product breakthroughs, discovery of newer markets (when the older ones are stagnated), rising incomes, and telecom and media revolution have necessitated newer and innovative marketing approaches, because the time to react to competition is shorter than ever before and there is little scope for blunders. The present day consumers are unforgiving and punish brands that do not live up to their promise by shifting their loyalties to other brands unlike yesteryears' customers. No wonder so many brands of past have just disappeared from the shelves. Most of the brands which enjoyed uninterrupted reputation in the past market were now seen rare and nowhere close to their

Reporting Forensic Evidence Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

Reporting Forensic Evidence - Research Paper Example Therefore, the report ought to be more formal for clear presentation. For instance, in the report of the investigation that involves a group of criminal enterprise, a comprehensive report is to be produced. Therefore, the forensic investigators can apply the use of a computer to carry out the forensic procedures. Computer forensic is thus the utilization of the computer applications and also analysis for the discovery of any legal evidence involved in the field of forensics. The use of the computer to practice the forensic investigations enables a quick identification and capture of the potential criminal through the use of vital data in the computer (Stauffer & Bonfanti, 2006). During the forensic investigation process, some of the things that were accomplished are the process of gathering the critical details of the potential suspects. This can only be achieved when the forensic investigators are rightly granted a warrant. This warrant allows them to carry out the forensic investig ation procedures without any limits. Therefore, the investigators first must obtain a legal warrant from the authority to enable them access any form of information from individuals. Furthermore, the evidence obtained by the investigator must not be interfered with. For instance, in the computer forensic investigation, the computers must not be touched or even moved once the incidence has occurred. The investigators must further protect the data and the system and its components so as to be used for the prosecution in the court. Moreover, a continued chain of custody is maintained. Eventually, during the retrieval of the data of the suspects, the investigator ought to be extremely careful so as to avoid any distortion of data contained in the computer. Consequently, the evidence collected by the forensic investigator ought to meet some set requirements. These includes that the evidence ought to be produced then also be professionally authenticated and furthermore be of the best evid ence available (Stauffer & Bonfanti, 2006). There are numerous types of systems that are employed during the examination procedures of the forensic investigation. The evidence gathered by the investigator varies widely. Some of these evidences are obtained from the computer includes theft of the intellectual property; there is also theft of the trade secrets. For instance, the investigators can employ the manual form of collecting forensic evidence or they can employ the computer technology method in the collection of the forensic evidences. The computer method used in the collecting evidences of any form of crime is the latest developed procedure. This technique is quick and also among the most effective procedure to be utilized. The forensic investigators utilize the computer forensic to gather any forensic evidences to be utilized in court. For instance, the evidence obtained for criminals, theft, deaths, and all forms of suicides (Anastasi, 2003). Additionally, a variety of tool s are employed by the forensic investigator during the investigation process. Thus for an effective process in the forensic investigation, a smarty decision ought to be made on the best and most valuable tools to be utilized. This is to enable the investigator have an accurate analysis of the evidences obtained. These tools employed by the investigators can also be created by individuals who are experienced. Unfortunately, this idea is not embraced by many because it is hard to

Infrastructure for Data Storage Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words - 1

Infrastructure for Data Storage - Essay Example In simple words, Direct Attached Storage (DAS) is a storage device directly attached to a host system, such as the internal hard drive of a server computer. In order to store data for the computer system, the DAS is the most well-known method. This is considered as the core element that is promoted by Oracle and several other startups. In 2004, the Sun’s Honeycomb filter box introduces Nutanix’s Compete Cluster and Oracle’s Exadata and Exalogic along with incorporated server or storage supplies. The DAS model is then reinvented by these modern developments and a kind of clustered DAS. There is a threat according to the dominant nature of SAN among the direct-attached storage and SAN preference. Moreover, SAN provides extraordinary and well-organized storage elements to many servers as compared to DAS. In a typical SAN display, the server-based applications obtain storage I/Os completed in a constantly short time and data is saved from missing. In addition, many servers share the infrastructure provided by SAN to access the application. However, SAN data can be accessed by any independent servers. The applications assume that they are using DAS while but in reality, they are accessing a SAN. In order to speed up the applications, the SUN Honeycomb is implicated by placing NAS disks into the similar inclusion while using multiple servers and advanced file systems. This proposal did not spread commonly but it worked for Sun. Moreover, once the Oracle is purchased by the Sun, the class was generated for super charged Exalogic and Exadata boxes. The typical SAN was produced and created earlier than utilization of VMware and server virtualization. If this is accomplished, the servers can get a larger number of cores and sockets. For instance, a physical servers including CPU in working condition along with Windows became a two socket, quad-core computer and contain eight cores.

Statement of the Problem for my dissertation Research Paper

Statement of the Problem for my dissertation - Research Paper Example A number of research studies about the RET programs have shown variations in changes and radical improvements relating to the teachers. There is some form of agreement that RET programs are excellent for the instructors as it broadens the intellect during study and empowers the teachers with sufficient acquaintance on how to work on research. The NGSS practices have been established to be the best to educators and students since they enhance learning through students’ engagements such as enabling them to vigorously explore the scientific knowledge. This knowledge is supposed to be acquired in class by practicing actual scientific or engineering research (NGSS Lead States, 2013). Most of the findings put forward that science teachers are required to go through comprehensive assessment to establish if they have embraced research as an imperative factor that improves their teaching practices. (Musante, 2006). Background on RET programs What are RET programs? In the course of RET programs teachers discover the way scientists do research in STEM fields. In addition, teachers play a role in the environment of scientific research (Grove, Dixon, Pop, 2009, Ononye et al., 2007). RET programs more often than not distribute teachers in research laboratories for a period that ranges from six weeks to two months to make possible their participation in scientific research in the true world (Pop, Dixon & Grove, 2010). The (STEM) fields as well as faculty of computer science and engineering in colleges to make information and acquaintance associated to these fields accessible to students. Features of RET programs Teacher participation in the RET program is very important in terms of teachers’ knowledge and scientific research. Research Experiences for Teacher (RET) has stirred up professional development amongst teachers and students themselves. In effect, it has improved the teaching and learning practices in classroom. RET programs vary considerably depending o n the specialization of the teachers. Moreover, other research methods such as discussions, observations and interviews are geared toward improving the understanding of scientific research practice while some focus on basic skills of solutions for mathematical and scientific problems (Schulte, 2009). Research on RETs As in every profession, research and experience still remain a fundamental characteristic in the field of education. Research in this case comprises the knowledge and skills bestowed by observation and proceedings gained by exploring a given aspect. Most of the findings suggest that science teachers are required to go through comprehensive assessment to determine if they have embraced research as an important factor that improves their teaching practices. This is because most teachers are conversant with class tests in contrast to research practices, which are perceived to expose them to many skills needed during actual professional exploration (Goreham, 2010). Effects on teacher’ practice Several studies have shown that teachers who used an online support system are at an advantage of translating their research experience into their own classroom teaching after participating in the RET (Hardre, Nanny, Refai, & Slater, 2010). It is worth noting; however, after the teachers had research

Bachelor's degree obtaining Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words

Bachelor's degree obtaining - Research Paper Example † written by Marty Nemko and Charles Murray, they express their ideas and they believe that the aspiration to achieve a bachelor's degree is not worthwhile for all students. Their views are very contrary to my point of view. A bachelor's degree is very important and needed by everyone. It is indeed worthwhile for all students to get their bachelor’s degree because of the many advantages the degree offers to each and every individual, especially in today’s world. In the essay â€Å"America’s Most Overrated Product: The Bachelor’s Degree† written by Nemko, a career counselor, columnist, and radio host based in Oakland, he expresses the idea that the goal of obtaining bachelor’s degree is not worthwhile for all students. He claims that most of the students today are not good students, but they just want to prove to the others that they can get the bachelor’s degree. Many students take it really long time to finish their education. S ome of them are even dropouts from school. These days many students do pass the examinations but eventually they do not really understand what it is all about. Nemko has noted that nowadays 40% of freshmen do not graduate from their school even in 6 years. Eventually, the college graduates of today’s time are compelled to take up some unprofessional jobs that they really do not want to join. The job that they get is not the job that they dream of. College and universities nowadays are like businesses and the students who are study there are the cost item (Nemko). Many institutions educate their students in the cheapest way. They do not teach their students in the way they should teach them. Normally, these educational institutions have many large lecture classes, but only a handful of good teachers are available. The teachers who are appointed by these institutions are hired because of their research potential and not because they have the ability or the inclination to teach the students. It would be better for colleges to hold much higher standards for their education. This might cause them to cost much more and it will require more time for the students to get their degree. But when someone is conferred the degree, it would prove to be something of great value to their lives. Nowadays, most people who are new graduates and have been selected for jobs lack the essential skill sets required for what the job description demands from the selected candidate. This goes on to show the insignificance or the lack of true value of the degree they have been conferred on. The author has also been of the opinion that college selection should ideally be a wise choice for students and that very few students are actually currently encouraged to make such crucial considerations. He opines that it is better for someone to pursue their education and not get their degree if they are forced to take it. On the other hand, the essay â€Å"Should the Obama Greneration Drop Out?† written by Murray, a scholar at American Enterprise Institute, also expresses the same idea that the goal of obtaining bachelor’s degree is not worthwhile for all students. In his essay, he discusses Obama’s ideas. Obama’s idea is about expanding the use of community colleges and tuition tax credits (Murray). The bachelor’s degree has nowadays become one of the foremost criteria for most jobs. Again, it is imperative that making the bachelor’

Maximus and Aquinas - Essay Example Thomas Aquinas and St. Maximus the Confessors input on this issue. Will can be defined as choice or determination. Divine will is what a Divine being, God, chooses or determines. Even though it sounds clear enough, the question then becomes; who is God or what components make up God? This leads to a discussion on knowledge about God, including what is the true knowledge. Then influences on mens perception of true knowledge, like Plato or Aristotle need to be examined. Human will, or human choice or determination, appears less complicated, but in reality is not. The reason human will is not clear cut comes down to how much Divine will influences mans thoughts. This factor is unknown. Opinions range from human will that is totally free to human will being guided by completely by Divine will. Aquinas and Maximus agree that humans have a will, or choice when dealing with issues of God. Aquinas asserted â€Å"that for the knowledge of any truth whatsoever man needs Divine help, that the intellect may be moved by God to its act.†1 Despite this statement, Aquinas thought that humans have a natural instinct to have knowledge without Divine revelation. Aquinas also acknowledged that Divine revelation occurs from time to time, "especially in regard to faith.†2 This means that true knowledge comes from God, but humans can also reason things out with and without Divine revelation. Through the working out of the commandments the mind puts off the passions. Through the spiritual contemplation of visible realities it puts off impassioned thoughts of things. Through the knowledge of invisible realities it puts off contemplation of visible things. And finally this it puts off through knowledge of the Holy Trinity.3 Maximus felt that knowledge comes in an abstracting from the realm of the senses into one of intellect.4 Maximus thought that any projection onto an thought of possible apprehension makes out perception of this object false.5 This

Geology Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 3500 words

Geology - Essay Example Because of these concerns, the prominent changes, at least many of it, occur so in the arctic region. The basis for this is strong positive feedback associated with occurs with ice and snow melt. As a fact, ice and snow are highly reflective and white, for this reason, when the ground or ocean beneath is revealed more absorption occurs. This leads to further warmingfurther melting etc Clearly the level of warming currently occurring in the arctic is having an enormous impact on the region and the magnitude of further warming is set to be disastrous for the region. Thus, the Arctic Climate Impact Assessment (ACIA) states: "The reduction in sea ice is very likely to have devastating consequences for polar bears, ice-dependant seals, and local people for whom these animals are the primary source of food." The polar bear (Ursus maritimus) is the world's largest species of bear and the largest land predator. There is a great difference in size between male and female polar bears, with the males (350-800 kg) weighing more than twice as much as the females (150-300 kg). Their body weight varies considerably during the season - especially female bears which can often double in weight between early spring and late summer. Compared to other bear species, the polar bear has a relatively small, long and narrow head, smaller and shorter fur-covered ears, and shorter, more powerful claws. Its longer predatory teeth and sharper molars have helped polar bears adapt to the arctic climate and its almost exclusively carnivorous lifestyle. The polar bear is the youngest species of bear and is closely related to the brown bear (Ursus arctos) and grizzly bear (Ursus arctos horribilis). In the wild, polar bears normally live to be 20-30 years old. Both males and females mature at the age of four to five years. Females often give birth to their first litter of cubs when they reach maturity, while males do not usually start mating until they are between eight to ten years old. Mating takes place in April-May, but delayed implantation (the fertilised egg stops developing at an early stage) means that foetal development does not commence until September-October. During late autumn, females go into hibernation and remain there for approximately four months. At about the beginning of January, between one and three cubs are born (depending on the mother's age and condition). The newborn cubs are extremely small, weighing only about half a kilo, but they grow rapidly due to the high fat content of their mother's milk. The cubs stay with the mother until they are two-and-a-half years old. The cub infant mortality rate is high and can exceed 70%. Only about a third of cubs r each the age of two. The polar bear is a circumpolar species and is found in arctic regions where there is access to sea ice throughout much of the year. Polar bear populations are found in Canada, Alaska (USA), Greenland, the Russian Arctic, the Norwegian Arctic and on the ice surrounding the North Pole. The global population of polar bears consists of roughly 20,000-25,000 individuals spread between 19 sub-populations. However, polar bears wander across enormous distances, so there are no major genetic differences between these populations. The distribution of polar bears in their habitat is far from even and is highly dependent on the availability of their prey. In the central areas of the polar icecap there is only very limited access to prey, and the density of polar bear

The Catcher in the Rye by J. D. Salinger Essay Example for Free

The Catcher in the Rye by J. D. Salinger Essay The novel The Catcher in the Rye by J. D. Salinger is a novel, which centres around the theme of isolation. This study will examine this theme, along with the writers use of characterisation and setting, which help to convey the characters eventual break down. The Catcher in the Rye is a personal account told by Holden Caulfield, the narrator of the book. He recalls a weekend of his life from a psychiatric hospital, and throughout gives off an impression of his loneliness, and isolation from society. We see everything through Holdens eyes, and so he cannot always be said to be a reliable narrator, however we still see him to have problems and so there is still room for an outside perspective. Throughout the novel, Holden shows feelings of alienation. He says he feels trapped on the other side of life, and generally doesnt feel he fits in with the world around him. He finds interaction with other people confusing and difficult, and so makes out to himself that he is above interacting with other people, and almost superior to anyone else around him. I thought what Id do was, Id pretend to be one of those deaf-mutes. That way I wouldnt have to have any goddam stupid conversations with anybody. Holden tries to escape from social situations, as he finds them difficult to cope with and uncomfortable. However, as well as causing Holden problems, his isolation from society also acts as the little stability that he has in his life, and the only aspect he can control. As a sixteen-year-old boy growing up, these feelings of alienation could simply be seen as regular teenage emotions, however in Holdens case his isolation eventually leads to him breaking down, and ending up in psychiatric care. Holden is at the stage in his life where both society and his own body are telling him that he should be progressing into adulthood. He can be a very immature character, and even Holden himself realises this, but justifies it by saying he is going through a phase. He seems to want to resist the process of maturing, and fears the change and complicity of adult life. He enjoys the innocence, and lack of responsibility of childhood, and doesnt want to swap this for the grown up and more serious things in life. However, Holden is attracted to some aspects of grown up life, such as independence, sexuality and alcohol. Throughout the book he experiences these aspects, but he refuses to accept the others. He believes that adulthood is full of phonies, and that many people around him are fake and superficial. Having said this, Holden himself lies and deceits people throughout the story. He tells the woman on the train that he is the school janitor because he didnt feel like giving her his whole life history, and he says himself that he is a compulsive liar, the most terrific liar one could meet. Throughout the book though, it is unclear whether people actually believe him, and so his deceitfulness and lies could be seen to simply help his own self-delusion, and be another part of him not understanding who he is. As Holden cannot fully accept that he is maturing, and becoming an adult, he doesnt appear to really know who he is. He seems to be trying to find himself in the story, and is looking for direction in life. We see this when he asks people several times where the ducks fly away to in the winter. This shows that he is searching for a way to lead his life, but is not sure where to go from his current situation. During the book, Holden stays in the same place for very little time. He moves from his school, Pencey, to several locations in New York, and then ends up back in his hometown. This constant change of scenery reflects Holdens feeling of not belonging, and shows that he is struggling to find his place in society. While at Pencey, Holden does not get on overly well with his classmates. After being thrown out of many schools previously, Holden is asked to leave Pencey, and so goes to New York City hoping to find something to do with himself. While in New York, he visits many places such as pubs and clubs. These places are usually seen to be for adults, and more mature people and so they act as a contradiction to Holdens feelings towards adult life. While in the clubs Holden can experience the only aspects of adulthood that he is willing to accept, and so he goes in order to drink and meet new people. After being in several places away from home, at the end of the novel Holden returns back to his hometown. Originally Holdens intentions are to move away, and live away from his parents. However after speaking to his younger sister, he decides that he will stay at home. This shows that he is finally beginning to accept that he has to face up to real life, and deal with the things that truly matter such as his family. It is ironic however; that it is after talking to his younger sister that he makes this decision. She manages to convince Holden to stay put, and it is when watching her on the merry-go-round that he finally breaks down into tears and realises what is happening to him. Holden does not finish the story, but ends it here, only going on to say that he is now in the hospital. While in the hospital it seems that he has had time to reflect on what happened to him, and possibly think about who he is as a person. After inventing his own fantasy of adulthood, full of superficiality, he must realise that all of his presumptions are not necessarily true and that he himself has been behaving in an unrealistic manner. The character of Holden could be seen simply as a troubled teenager, however it is made more believable that the character does in fact have mental problems, having ended up in a psychiatric ward. The Catcher in the Rye raises issues of isolation and how Holden as a young individual deals with it. J.D. Salinger expresses very well how the character struggles to cope with life; its effects on him and the way he ends up, using the technique of setting and the development of Holden as a character.

Role of Clothing in Communication

Role of Clothing in Communication Clothing is a language, a nonverbal system of communication that through its symbols conveys much about the wearer to the viewer. Before people speak to one another, their clothing makes a statement that expresses their sex, age, class, occupation, origin and personality, as well as what they are or what they want to be at a particular moment. A businessperson is recognized in a well tailored suit. Fashion can suggest or signal status in a social group. Groups with high cultural status like to keep in fashion to display their position; people who do not keep in fashion within a so-called style tribe can risk shunning. Because keeping in fashion often requires considerable amounts of money, fashion can be used to show off wealth (compare conspicuous consumption). Adherence to fashion trends can thus form an index of social affluence and an indicator of social mobility. Humans often wear articles ofÂÂ  clothingÂÂ  (also known asÂÂ  Apparel,ÂÂ  dress,ÂÂ  garmentsÂÂ  orÂÂ  attire) on the body . In its broadest sense, clothing includes coverings for the trunk and limbs as well as coverings for hands (gloves), feet (shoes,ÂÂ  sandals,ÂÂ  boots), and head (hats, caps). Articles carried rather than worn (likeÂÂ  pursesÂÂ  and umbrellas) normally count as accessories rather than as clothing. Humans also decorate their bodies with makeup or cosmetics, perfume,ÂÂ  jewelryÂÂ  and other ornament; cut, dye, and arrange their head and body hair (hairstyle), and sometimes their skin (tattoo, scarifications, piercing). All these decorations contribute to the overall effect and message of clothing, but do not constitute clothing per se. People wear clothing for functional and/or social reasons. Clothing protects the body; it also delivers social messages to other humans. Function includes protection of the body against strong sunlight, extreme heat or cold, and precipitation; protection against insects, noxious chemicals, weapons, contact with abrasive substances in sum, against anything that might injure an unprotected human body. Humans have shown extreme inventiveness in devising clothing solutions to practical problems. See: armor,ÂÂ  diving suit, bee-keepers costume, motorcycle leathers,ÂÂ  high-visibility clothing. Social messages sent by clothing, accessories, and decorations can involve social status, occupation, ethnic and religious affiliation, marital status and sexual availability, etc. Humans must know the code in order to recognize the message transmitted. If different groups read the same item of clothing or decoration with different meanings, the wearer may provoke unanticipated responses. Social status: in many societies, people of high rank reserve special items of clothing or decoration for themselves. Only Roman emperors could wear garments dyeed with Tyrian purple; only high-ranking Hawaiian chiefs could wear feather cloaks and palaoa or carved whale teeth. In other societies, no laws prohibit lower-status people wearing high statusÂÂ  garments, but the high cost of status garments effectively limits purchase and display. In current Western society, only the rich can affordÂÂ  haute couture. The threat of social ostracism may also limit garment choice. Occupation: military, police, firefighters usually wearÂÂ  uniforms, as do workers in many industries. School-children often wearÂÂ  school uniforms, college and university students wear academic dress. Members of religious orders may wear uniforms known as habits. Sometimes a single item of clothing or a single accessory can declare ones occupation and/or status for example, the highÂÂ  toqueÂÂ  or chefs hat worn by a chief cook. Ethnic, political, and religious affiliation: In many regions of the world, styles in clothing and ornament declare membership in a certain village, caste, religion, etc. A Scotsman declares his clan with hisÂÂ  tartan; an Orthodox Jew his religion with his (non-clothing) sidelocks; a French peasant woman her village with her cap orÂÂ  coif. Clothes can also proclaim dissent from cultural norms and mainstream beliefs, as well as personal independence. In 19th century Europe, artists and writers livedÂÂ  la vie de Bohe meÂÂ  and dressed to shock: George Sand in mens clothing, female emancipationists in bloomers, male artists in velvet waistcoats and gaudy neckcloths. Bohemians, beatniks, hippies, Goths, and punks continued the ( counter-cultural) tradition in the 20th century West. Now thatÂÂ  haute coutureÂÂ  plagiarises street fashion within a year or so, street fashion may have lost some of its power to shock, but it still motivates millions trying to look hip and cool. People such as inventor Dean Kamen or film director Peter Jackson wear simple functional clothing to distance themselves from the establishment (and possibly to attract additional attention). Marital status: Hindu women, once married, wearÂÂ  sindoor, a red powder, in the parting of their hair; if widowed, they abandonÂÂ  sindoorÂÂ  and jewelry and wear simple white clothing. Men and women of the Western world may wear wedding rings to indicate their marital status. Sexual availability: Some clothing indicates the modesty of the wearer. For example, many Muslim women wear a head or body covering (hijab, bourqa orÂÂ  burka,ÂÂ  chador,ÂÂ  abaya) that proclaims their status as respectable women. Other clothing may indicate flirtatious intent. For example, a Western woman might wear extreme stiletto heels, close-fitting and body-revealing black or red clothing, exaggerated make-up, flashy jewelry and perfume to show sexual availability. What constitutes modesty and allurement varies radically from culture to culture, within different contexts in the same culture, and over time as differentÂÂ  fashionsÂÂ  rise and fall. Moreover, a person may choose to display a mixed message.ÂÂ  For example, a Saudi Arabian woman may wear anÂÂ  abayaÂÂ  to proclaim her respectability, but choose an abaya of luxurious material cut close to the body and then accessorize withÂÂ  high heelsÂÂ  and a fashionable purse. Al l the details proclaim sexual desirability, despite the ostensible message of respectability. Similarly, a Japanese schoolgirl may wear the required school uniform in a way (skirts waistband rolled to shorten the skirt, long sleeves rolled up) that says sexy schoolgirl rather than good girl.

A History Of The British Labour Party Politics Essay

A History Of The British Labour Party Politics Essay The Labour Party is a political party in Great Britain that is just about 110 years old. The party was formed in 1900 as an outgrowth of the trade union movement and to change Parliaments interests. The reason the Labour Party wanted Parliament changed was because the people who formed the party felt that Parliament was not representing the interests of everybody in Britain. The people who felt neglected by Parliament were hard working people, socialists, and unionists. During the early stages, the Labour party struggled to make an immediate impact in Britains political system and the partys leaders had to do something about their struggle. The Labours leaders worked with Liberal Governments during 1906-1914 to help themselves gain some form of political ground. The Liberal parties eventually split in 1916 and the Labour Party saw this as a perfect opportunity to obtain power. The 1918 election proved a pivotal point for the Labour Party and even though they did not win the general e lection, they came away with one-quarter of the vote. The reason the 1918 election was so successful for the Labours was because of World War I coming to an end and the growth of womens suffrage. On December 6, 1923, the Labour Party won the general election and finally reached the major political office for the first time in its partys history. The party only held office for a few months under Ramsay MacDonald, and failed to get reelected for a second term. A main reason for the party not getting reelected was because of the Zinoviev letter. The letter was published in British press stating that there were connections between Russian Communists and the Labour Party. Due to anti-communism in Great Britain, the Labours lost the 1924 election as well as 40 seats in the House of Commons. The Zinoviev letter later turned out to be forgery, but the damage was already done to the Labour Party. The Labour Party would rebound later in 1929, but the major election they won came in 1945. The crucial election followed after the Second World War. When the war ended in May 1945, Winston Churchill called for a general election a few months later in July. The Labour Party was running under the slogan of Let Us Face the Future, and its message was that Britain cannot return to poverty and unemployment like the 1930s. The Labour Party also promised to remove disease, want, squalor, ignorance, and unemployment. The Labours ended up winning in a landslide and this presented the party with the opportunity of making significant changes for Great Britain. After the crucial election in 1945, the Labour Party once again was elected in 1950 and this marked the first time in the Partys history where they won consecutive elections. Following the 1950 election, the Labour Party would only be in office for around 14 years till 1997. The Conservative Party dominated the general elections, winning three consecutive terms in 1951-1959 and four consecutive terms in 1979-1992. This was a result of internal fighting of the Labour Party and as a consequence, people detached from the party to form the Social Democratic Party in 1981. All of these effects left the Labour Party out of dominance for nearly three decades and would not come back to power until Labour Party candidate Tony Blair was up for election. Blair had become the party leader in 1994 and won the 1997 general election in a landslide. Blairs term was also called the New Labour because it was seen as a separation from the old Labour for having different policies such as one known as the Third Way. The New Labour term was proven to be the right fit for Blair because he won the next two elections and this became the Labour Partys first time winning three cons ecutive elections. Blair did not become very popular with Great Britain and its citizens because of his stance on the Iraq War. Blair ended up resigning on June 27, 2007 and Gordon Brown was handed the Prime Minister position after Blairs resignation. Gordon Brow was the Chancellor of the Exchequer during Blairs term as Prime Minister of Great Britain. The Chancellor of the Exchequer is a Cabinet position responsible for all economic and financial matters. The economy was one of the main concerns for both Blair and Brown, but Blair had to overcome Thatcherism and implement a new strategy for fixing the economy. There were many ideological platforms that Blair ran during the 10 years of being Prime Minister, but one of the main ones was reworking the economy. The way Blair

richard nixon :: essays research papers

Richard Nixon is known as the 37th president that resigned from office. I am going to tell you the whole story. Nixon was born in 1913 in Yorba Linda, California, the second of five sons of Francis Nixon and Hannah Nixon. The Nixons were Scots-Irish and the Milhouses were of Irish and English descent, known as Quakers. Richard Nixon attended public schools in Whittier, California, and went to Whittier College, a Quaker institution, where he majored in history. He won a scholarship to Duke University Law School and received his law degree in 1937. Nixon joined an established law firm in Whittier and there met his future wife, Thelma Ryan. They married on June 21, 1940, and had two daughters, Patricia in 1946 and Julie in 1948.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   In 1946 Nixon was persuaded by California Republicans to be their candidate to challenge the popular Democratic Congressman Jerry Voorhis for his seat in the United States House of Representatives. Nixon’s campaign was an example of the vigorous and aggressive style characteristic of his political career. He accused Voorhis of being soft on Communism. The two men confronted each other in a series of debates, and Voorhis was forced into a defensive position. Nixon won the election by a vote of 65,586 to 49,994. As a new member of the Congress of the United States, Nixon gained valuable experience in international affairs while serving on a special committee that helped establish the European Recovery Program. Nixon also served on the House of Education and Labor Committee, where he helped draft the Taft-Hartley Act on labor-management relations.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   In 1948, he was reelected to Congress after winning both the Republican and Democratic nominations. In 1950 the Republicans chose Nixon as their candidate for the U.S. Senate from California. His opponent was the liberal Congresswoman Helen Gahagan Douglas. In another bitterly fought campaign, Nixon linked her voting record with American-Labor-Party congressman Vito Marcantonio, who was widely regarded as pro-Communist. Nixon won the election by 680,000 votes.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   In 1952 Nixon was selected to be the running mate of General Dwight Eisenhower, who had won the Republican presidential nomination. Shortly after Nixon’s vice-presidential nomination it was reported that a fund had been collected to meet his expenses as a senator. No evidence was produced that Nixon had misused the fund or given special favors to contributors, but many of Eisenhower’s advisers wanted Nixon to resign his candidacy.

journalism Essay -- essays research papers

A journalist is someone who works in the news gathering business, such as a photographer, editor or reporter. Journalism is all around us. It dominates television and surrounds us in the vast publishing industry of popularization. Journalism influence our perspectives on issues concerning us. In other words, its undeniable that journalism has a deep impact on our lives. There are two sides to journalism – good journalism and bad journalism. According to K. Minogue, the journalist has the power to mould the information they receive into â€Å"propaganda† or they could just report the news with additions of both side of the story. Journalism could even cause a political uproar like uncovering the Watergate scandal that forced President Nixon of the USA from office in 1974. Hence, it is very important that a journalist follow a code of ethics to maintain peace and harmony among the people.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  I agree that even though journalists are said to have a freedom of expression or speech, they still have to have public responsibilities. In Singapore, we journalist have to watch what we say in delicate matters like September 11 attacks and the current Japanese – China issue. The September 11 attacks may cause our society to be more weary of the Muslims in our society. As journalists, we must we careful not to generalize that all Muslims are extremists. What we can do is to ask our Muslim community on their opinion on the terrorists’ acts and publish it in the news. Since Singapore is a cosmopolitan city, racial and religious matters must be treated diplomatically and fairly. The other races would then be able to understand the Muslims better. Understanding each other would really help nation building as there is social cohesion and thus Singapore would be a peaceful and harmonious home for all. Honesty is another aspect which is very significant. Journalists should observe the common standards of decency and stand accountable to the public for the honesty and accuracy of their news reports. A journalist should not modify or influence any information that goes into their hands. They could do so by using suggestive words and withholding necessary information. Many a time journalists try to create a hype or to make their paper sell like hotcakes by compromising honesty. In Singapore, it is written in the Singapore Jou... ...ght to a certain extent for journalism around the world especially Singapore. Australia and Singapore differ in culture and governance, hence some of the principles may not work in the latter country. Singapore has to provide more protection in journalism to preserve the diverse culture she has. Thus its natural for the government to be more strict by imposing fines if a journalist publish unethical news. This would strengthen the bond of trust of the people in Singapore. References: Goh C. Bloom’s Research and Response

Bloom's Research and Response Bloom's Research and Response Benjamin Bloom developed Bloom’s Taxonomy of Education in 1956. It is a teaching system developed to classify learning objectives and skills (Larkin & Burton, 2008). Lori Anderson and David Krathwohl revised the original publication- Bloom’s Taxonomy of Educational objectives and also added new knowledge and ideas to the original material. This is the handbook in use by educators today. The Educational objectives that Bloom developed he categorized into three domains: Cognitive, Affective, and Psychomotor. Each domain has its own set of specific expectations. Bloom broke down his taxonomy into different levels of complexity. They are arraigned in a hierarchy from less to more complex. When teaching, the educator will use the levels so that mastery of the first level is necessary by the learner before the next level can be achieved. The Cognitive Domain focuses on knowledge and developing the skills of comprehens ion, it also uses critical thinking skills. There are six levels of complexity in this Domain: Knowledge, Comprehension, Application, Analysis, Synthesis, and Evaluation. The Affective Domain focuses on how the learner deals with emotions and with his ability to feel empathy for others. Bloom broke down this domain into five levels: Receiving (awareness), Responding (active participation in the learning process), Valuing, Organization, and Internalizing (values held that influence a behavior so it becomes a characteristic). The third domain, the Psychomotor Domain was not broken down into subcategories by Bloom but by Simpson in 1972. The Psychomotor Domain focuses on the ability to manipulate an object physically. This domain has seven levels: Perception, Set (readiness to act), Guided Response, Mechanism, Complex Overt Response (the ability to perform without hesitation), Adaptation, and Origination. When used, Bloom’s Taxonomy will provide the educator with a measurable way to assess the level of comprehension of the taught information by the learner (â€Å"Big Dog and Little Dog’s Performance Juxtaposition,† 2010). Nurses can use Bloom’s teaching method in educating patients with chronic diseases. First the nurse must assess the patient for level of understanding and readiness to learn. The nurse uses the Cognitive Domain to teach the patient about his specific disease and to facilitate understanding of all concepts associated with the disease and its treatments. In following the hierarchy the nurse would start with the simplest information and ideas and increase the complexity of the information after the patient has exhibited comprehension of the previously taught material. Using the Affective Domain the nurse helps the patient deal with his emotions related to his diagnosis and to attach a value to it.Once a patient has processed the information given to him, realizes the importance of managing his care and placing a value on it s importance, he is ready to use the psychomotor domain. The educator uses the Psychomotor domain to teach the skills portion of education. Diabetics need to learn how to use blood glucose testing equipment; patients may need to learn how to self-catheterize these are just two examples of skills that nurses teach that fall under this domain. There are many areas of education a nurse teaches daily. One of which is the information given to patients with chronic diseases in order for them to achieve or maintain self-sufficiency. Bloom’s teaching method gives those patients the best chance at mastering the necessary information and skills needed to live day-to-day with a chronic illness. As the written report continues the events be in chronological influence as in that respect is constitute up of hesitancy, and the mad man exposes that he has to murder the old man because of the panic from his affection, in that locationfore e real(prenominal) unrelentingness he slakely places his head round the bedchamber door allowing a tiny secede of glint to shine through with(predicate) upon the old mans sleeping face, searching for the inwardness which he greatly despised. However for seven nights the shopping centre was closed, and since the pith was not visible, i n that location was no reason to commit the violence, as it was not the old man he cute to destroy, unless it was instead this sinister shopping mall. On the eighth night he does kill the old man, but is currently terrified by rendering the old mans harkt beat grow louder and stronger below the basisboards that he cannot cope with the pounding and foolishness any longer, so he screamed clamorously his confession to the police. The caries and the Pendulum starts with the unnamed narrator recount hearing his destruction disapprobation from individuals clothed in black robes. Fainting after(prenominal) amountening to this news, he awakens afterwards in the bl severallyedness as the man finds himself disorientated intimately where he is. He buttoned-downly explores the fashion, lurch because his body is so weak, expressing the consternation that it could be a tomb where he has been inhumed alive. From this point he is subjected to psychical and soulal torture and great torment of not enjoying when he is going to die. supra him hangs a sear pendulum fair in stages closer to his body with every swing, last near to final stage, he begins his escape plan, and is carry through by General Lasalle and his French forces in an unanticipated conclusion to the bill. The ambit in gothic literature is very eventful factor for the success of the tarradiddle, for simulation the fits utilise in Edgar Allan Poes slight stories set the proof indorsers mood, and adds to the theme creating the correct automatic recognizeer machine for the subject matter. The telescope of the gothic literature The Cask of Amontillado plays an important role with the unwrapment of horror and tightness necessary for the referee to have. The horizontal surface is ideally set in catacombs under the of import graphic symbol Montresors set up the walls argon covered with gay b mavins, which conterminously sets the scene for a gothic paper. They argon below in his house orphic metro, and no one(a) go forth be able to hear them because of the carnival going on above. In order to chief(prenominal)tain that they were alone Montresor had tricked his servants into going to the carnival, I had told them I should not re unloose until the morning, and had give them explicit orders not to stir from the house. These orders were sufficient, I well knew, to in received thither immediate dis come forwardance, one and all, as soon as my back was work oned. The intense comment of the setting in this written report is very hesitationful and eerie. Edgar Allan Poe describes the men passing through walls of piled bones, with casks and puncheons intermingling, into the in close to recesses of the catacombs. The catacombs of death in this legend provide an appropriate setting for the taradiddles suspense and inevitable ending. The commonplace mood of the study is one of be infernal, this mood is significantly overhauled by the de finition of the location and phrases that have been purposely chosen by the author such as, the drops of moisture dribbling among the bones and its walls had been lined with compassionate bes remains. The Tell bosh Heart is another tale besides wrote by Edgar Allan Poe, it is set in a contrastive era as the author describes the percentage using lanterns and they have no electrical energy in the house, I put in a riff-black lantern. We in akin manner k in a flash that they ar in a hostile old house, from midnight to four in the morning. It is sliminess in the bed direction as the shutters atomic number 18 closed from fear of burglars his room was as black as switch with chummy darkness (for the shutters were closed fastened, through fear of robbers). It is not clear but the setting for this storey is probably European, as at the ending of the story Edgar Allan Poe describes officers of the police that appear knocking on the door policemen atomic number 18 ge nerally associated with England and Europe.Another congresswoman of a sinister setting in one of Edgar Allan Poes gothic stories is The cavum and the Pendulum. The story is set in Spain during the Spanish pursuit at some point in the sixteenth century, and begins in a homage where the shoplifter is listening to his death time by black robed judges. This is where the address basic realises his fate, and Edgar Allan Poe uses simple speech and phrases to exemplify his foreseeable fate, I trace these linguistic communication and minute even to grotesqueness thin with the intensity of their expression of firmness of unmovable resolution of stern contempt of human torture. For the remainder of the story the location is in a cell or prison underground, the narrator is in pitch black the blackness of eternal night encompassed me, he is degage in the cell, be tormented and under examination by the Spanish army. The setting in this story shows the conditions the part is subje cted to, the pit in the shopping centre of the floor was intended for his death, though he tripped and exposed the ditch. Now subject to much torture, he is beneath a wavering pendulum, bit by bit moving closer towards his body. The floor is covered in rats as Poe portrays them as fresh troops, hurriedly, with ravenous eyeball, which again adds to the disturbing setting of this story, which in turn helps the subscriber examine the situation the voice is in.In all of these gothic stories wrote by Edgar Allan Poe, he has chosen to use a sinister setting, frequently in an obscure place such as the catacombs or a prison cell. As for each one story changes and develops, so do the surroundings, becoming more dark and threatening. In these triple wretched stories Edgar Allan Poe uses certain regions to fix up and develop the story. The main character in each story is called the genius, and the antagonist is the character who ordinarily fights against him. In The Cask of Amon tillado, the star in Montresor, as he is the main character and also the narrator, he forms most(prenominal) of the story with the theme of his revenge. During the story Montresor explains what happened the night Fortunato was killed. Montresor is also perceived through the drool to be very in rateigent, since he turn over the murder so that no one would discover his plans, we can also tell of his intelligence by what he verbalize to Fortunato. He asked for assistance in wine-coloured tasting, but says if he is busy he will ask Luchesi , this causes Fortunato want to help even more as Montresor is now using reverse psychology on him, as you ar engaged, I am on my way to see Luchesi. If anyone has a critical turn, it is he. He will tell me.Montresor knew that burying him alive would give the surmount reward in form of revenge, and the superior satisfaction and ful contractent for him. Since the story is wrote in set-back person the author does not give a precise explanati on of Montresor as it is though the author is retelling the story. We ar told even his feelings and emotions and the reader is then go away form their own opinions on this character through studying their attitudes and actions. For manikin it is very clear to the reader Montresors despise towards Fortunato plus his determination for vengeance. The antagonist in The Cask of Amontillado is Fortunato, as he fights for his deportment and is the opposition of the protagonist. The consultations recognition of the character has to be again goaded from Montresors thoughts and feelings. Montresors opinion at the start of the story is evil and fearful towards him as he has offended him in the past, although the reader may agree with this at the beginning, near the end we begin to realize with Fortunato for beingness under torture.Much standardised the Cask of Amontillado, the story The Tell tosh Heart has both a protagonist and an antagonist. The protagonist in this story is t he narrator, we do not jazz his name but he is a servant in the house for the old man. From the opening of the story the character is seeking to persuade the audience that he is not insane, because he believes he is exceedingly intellectual for slaughtering the evil eye. Later on in the story it comes app atomic number 18nt to the audience that this man is in reality insane, proof of this comes at the end when he believes he can hear the old mans heartbeat, It was a low, dull, quick healthful much a sound a watch exacts when enveloped in cotton. From the description in the rehearsal we can understand the narrators fear of the eye as he gives a detailed portrayal he describes it as one of his eyes resembled that of a marauder a pale blue eye, with a film over it. Whenever it fell upon me, my blood ran icy and so by degrees very gradually I made up my foreland to take the life of the old man, and and so rid myself of the eye for ever. Edgar Allan Poe does not give a in persp icaciousness description of the antagonist, however we do know that he is an old man and that he has cataracts on his eyes, this is what is making the narrator imply that they are evil. We are left with our own interpretation of what the man is homogeneous. We are however given a clue, which is that, we now that he is a pleasant man from the extract He had never wronged me. He had never given me insult. once more handle the Cask of Amontillado the story is wrote in graduation exercise person and is although the author is retelling the story. In The match and the Pendulum there is only one main character, this is the man who has heard his death condemn and is now being tortured in the prison, and he is also the narrator recounting what has happened to him. The only other characters in the story are the Spanish army who are torturing the man. The protagonist begins the story with a recollection if a previous examination in which he now finds himself in a dungeon room being hel d capture. Throughout the story the character is face up with many situations for congressman mental and animal(prenominal) torture also facing death many times until eventually he is saved and released by the French army. Again like The Cask of Amontillado and The Tell chronicle Heart, the Pit and the Pendulum is wrote in showtime person, and therefore gives the sum of the author retelling the story. All ternary of these stories share the same exercise of how the characters are use and represented in the gothic stories. Edgar Allan Poe has firstly chose to wrote all of the tales in first person achieving the effect of him retelling the story as if it has actually happened before to him, projection this has left the reader to make their own analysis and judgements active the characters, leaving uncertainties about the characters never actually knowing who they are and what they are like.Themes are very important in creating the right mood for a gothic story they are apply in all three of the short gothic stories by Edgar Allan Poe. It is very harsh of this genre to have themes of good versus evil, and light versus dark. The Cask of Amontillado is a virile tale of revenge. Montresor, the sinister narrator of this story, pledges revenge upon Fortunato for a past insult. At this time we also see many other themes intercommunicate to the reader by using Montresor, for example death, satisfaction and horror. He wanted to be satisfied that he had full revenge upon Fortunato we know this from the choice of torture which was slow and thorough, watching him suffer. The themes in The Cask of Amontillado are also shown using the setting of the story. When the devil characters enter the catacombs, the setting represents the theme of death and horror as the tombs are describe with key adjectives as being lined with human remains and the drops of moisture trickle among the bones. In The Tell report Heart, Edgar Allan Poe has utilise very strong themes of mur der, fear and insanity. The main theme in this gothic story is fear and this is in the main presented through the protagonist. The protagonist has been used to show his fear for the eye, which is often described through the way he talks and describes it as evil, one of his eyes resembled that of a marauder. Other main themes in this story are insanity and madness, immediately at the beginning of the story the narrator challenges that he isnt mad How, then, am I mad?, nevertheless as the story continues we begin to see more of his mental illness awaiting the end of the story when the protagonist is drove exceedingly mad by the old mans heartbeat that he confesses his crime. The themes in this story are also presented though the characters, setting and actions. The theme of fear is shown through actions in the story the main action taken place is murdering the old man, and the dissection of his body. From this we are able to see that the man feared the eyes so much, that he has to rid himself of the eye forever and take the old mans life. panic is also represented through symbolism in the story, the author has made indisputable that the eye is illuminated in a wicked and fearful way, making sure that the audience understands the protagonists fear for the eye, and is also why the author chooses to keep his main revolve about on the description of the eye. There are also many themes in The Pit and the Pendulum however the main one being the theme of torture. This is presented through the key character in the story as he is the one being subjected to the suffering. We see his tribulation throughout the story when he is being put through mental and somatic torture. The theme of torment can also be represented through the setting in the tale. The depressing atmosphere of an old, dark damp dungeon in Toledo helps towards the general theme of the story significantly. The writer uses formulates such as damp and ice-cold, all of these helping to establish the them e, as many of them are associated with evil and dire situations. After reading this story you are left with a message never to give up, this is clear in the story as the protagonist by no means hands over his life to death even in the situations he is under.Edgar Allan Poe has used the same techniques for representing the theme in all three of these stories. In each of them he has used the characters, setting, actions and symbolism to decorate and help the audience recognize the varied themes. An additional similarity among these three stories is that they all include a theme of death.By using a frame of news report techniques in all three of these short gothic stories Edgar Allan Poe has been able to make the reader aware of the circumstances the characters are in, being able to do this also makes the story more realistic and pleasurable for the reader. By using first person in all three of these stories it grabs the readers attention pulling them peachy into what is casua lty in the story, making them feel involved. The language in a story is a very important narrative technique used in most gothic literature, and is carefully selected to construct a successful use of resource and to haoma tension this can also be through with various vocabulary and curse structure. The Cask of Amontillado uses language techniques to build suspense and to generate an imagery of the deep dark catacombs. There is use of commas which make pauses is in the text, building up anticipation and adding to the tension, an example of this is when Edgar Allan Poe is describing the passage to the tombs We passed through a present of low arches, descended, passed on, and descended again, arriving at a deep crypt, in which the foulness of the air caused our flambeaux quite a to glow than flame. The author also uses the effect of imagery in his stories this is used to illustrate the setting that the characters are in. An example of this is Walls had been lined with human remains, which produces a dim and wicked atmosphere. Phrases such as these are essential for the readers imagination, it also helps build up the tension amongst the reader as it reminds them of the death that is soon to come later on in the story.Another story, in which Edgar Allan Poe uses language to build the effect of tension and to make the audience more cautious of the situation in the tale, is The Tell storey Heart. Instantly at the opening, there are short sentences that make the audience slow down with their reading, which in turn builds up the tension in the story Object there was none. Passion there was none. I loved the old man. He had never wronged me. Another technique to develop suspense is by using stacks of hyphens for long pauses. These have been used legion(predicate) times throughout the Tell Tale Heart, particularly when the author has to increase anxiety of when the character enters the chamber on the eight night, I undid the lantern cautiously oh, so cautiously cautiously I undid it moreover so much that a case-by-case thin ray fell upon the vulture eye. Imagery has also been used in this story for the description of the eye, the effect this has on the reader makes them wary of the eye as it is described as evil and vulture like. The author has also used imagery when the man enters the bedroom on the eight night, he describes the room and every action by the character, His room was as black as pitch with the thick darkness (for the shutters were close fastened, through fear of robbers), and so I knew that he could not see the opening of the door, and I kept pushing on steady, steadily..The Pit and the Pendulum also has the use of imagery in the language, which is essential for the tale to be appreciate by the reader. The primary concenter in the story is describing the setting this has been done by using many powerful adjectives and adverbs. During the story Edgar Allan Poe has used a list of three commas to slow the text down, for ex ample then silence, and stillness, and night were the universe. in time again similar to the other stories wrote by Edgar Allan Poe, the Pit and the Pendulum uses imagery to build up the tension an example of this is when the character first begins to see the pendulum swinging down steadily down it crept. By repeating the word down it represents the repetitive and continuous swinging of the pendulum from side to side. There is repetition in the Pit and the pendulum to emphasize the point that he is now free from the swinging pendulum, For the moment, at lest, I was free. Free and in the travail of Inquisition There is also initial rhyme of sidelong, shrinking, and slow I slid from the embrace of the mend.To identify a gothic story from a normal tale there are certain factors which you recognize that can tell you the story is going to be of a gothic genre. The Tell Tale Heart has telling features so that the reader knows it is a gothic story, the first of these being is that it has both a protagonist and an antagonist, this is the main character and someone who fights against him. It also includes a subconscious fear that the man has of the evil eye, which continues through the story with heightened emotions, a great deal of terror and suspense. There is a sinister location of an old house quarantined at night, and a theme of life versus death. In the Cask of Amontillado much like the Tell Tale Heart there is also both an antagonist and a protagonist, Fortunato and Montresor. The story is also based on an old superstition of being interred alive, as this is what happens to Fortunato in the catacombs. During the story there is heightened emotions and build up of terror and tension, there is a melodramatic plot and a sinister location of deep underground where no one can hear them in the family tomb. The protagonist in the Pit and the Pendulum is the man who is being tortured, heightened emotions are shown in this story through the terror and fear of deat h. There is lots of melodrama like in the other two stories as the torture is being dragged out. Once again like in many of Edgar Allan Poe stories the setting is very sinister, as he is in a damp black room containing a pit in the middle, covered in rats. There are themes of good versus evil and life versus death in this story. All these factors of the gothic genre are used to recognize and understand these stories, based in selective features which they contain.By looking at the three stories wrote by Edgar Allan Poe, The Pit and the Pendulum, The Tell Tale Heart and the Cask of Amontillado, I can see that there are many similarities between them. The main coincidence is that they have all been wrote in first person, the effect of this is that it draws you into the story and gets the reader involved, I think Edgar Allan Poe has chose to use this on all three of these gothic stories as the reader then has an advantage to understanding what is happening in the tale. Another similar ity between all three of these stories is the setting. In a gothic story the setting is usually sinister and dark as this helps to the general effect the story has on its audience, in each story the location is isolated and usually in a dark room. The use of language is also very similar in these three stories, in each of them there is use of hyphens and short sentences all to build up suspense and tension.

Did I deficiency to imprint on some girl who hung out in a mall all day?I unbroken handout away north, and it got more and more crowded. Eventually, I found a big super C full of kids and families and skateboards and bikes and kites and picnics and the whole geek. I hadnt noniced till now it was a nice day. Sun and all that. Or maybe not.Id snap off get this car back to the guy I borrowed it from, I muttered. She smiled again. Glad to hear youre going straight.Yeah, you win over me.She watched me get in the car, still s ort of concerned. I probably looked like someone who was about to drive off a cliff. Which maybe I wouldve, if that kind of moved work for a werewolf. She waved once, her eyes trailing after the car.At first, I drove more moderately on the way back. I wasnt in a rush. I didnt want to go where I was going. endorse to that house, back to that forest. bear to the pain Id run from. Back to being absolutely alone with it.Okay, that was melodramatic. I wouldnt be all alone, but that was a heavy(a) thing. Leah and deform would have to suffer with me. I was glad band wouldnt have to suffer long. Kid didnt deserve to have his peace of mind ruined. Leah didnt, either, but at least it was something she chthonianstood. Nothing new about pain for Leah.I sighed big as I thought about what Leah wanted from me, because I knew now that she was going to get it. I was still pissed at her, but I couldnt ignore the fact that i could make her life easier. And now that I knew her founder I thou ght she would probably do this for me, if our positions were reversed. It would be interesting, at the very least, and strange, too, to have Leah as a confrere as a friend. We were going to get under each others skin a lot, that was for sure. She wouldnt be one to let me wallow, but I thought that was a good thing. Id probably need someone to throw in my butt now and then. But when it came right down to it, she was really the only friend who had any contingency of understanding what I was going through now.I thought of the hunt this morning, and how close our minds had been for that one moment in time. It hadnt been a gloomy thing. Different. A little scary, a little awkward. But also nice in a weird way.I didnt have to be all alone. And I knew Leah was strong enough to face with me the months that were coming. Months and years. It make me tired to think about it. I felt like I was staring out across an ocean that I was going to have to swim from shore to shore before I could res t again. So much time coming, and then so little time before it started. Before I was flung into that ocean. Three and a half more eld, and here I was, wasting that little bit of time I had.I started driving too fast again.I saw surface-to-air missile and Jared, one on either side of the bridle-path like sentinels, as I raced up the avenue toward Forks. They were well hidden in the thick branches, but I was expecting them, and I knew what to look for. I nodded as I blew past them, not some(prenominal)ering to wonder what they do of my day trip.I nodded to Leah and Seth, too, as I cruised up the Cullens driveway. It was startle to get dark, and the clouds were thick on this side of the sound, but I saw their eyes blaze in the glow of the headlights. I would explain to them later. Thered be plenty of time for that.It was a surprise to find Edward waiting for me in the garage. I hadnt seen him away from Bella in days. I could tell from his face that nothing bad had happened to h er. In fact, he looked more peaceful than before. My place upright tightened as I remembered where that peace came from.It was too bad that with all my brooding Id forgotten to wreck the car. Oh well. I probably wouldnt have been able to stand cause to be perceived this car, anyway. Maybe hed guessed as much, and thats why hed lent it to me in the first place.A few things, Jacob, he said as currently as I cut the engine.I took a deep breath and held it for a minute. accordingly, slowly, I got out of the car and threw the keys to him. conveys for the loan, I said sourly. Apparently, it would have to be repaid. What do you want now?Firstly I know how slow you are to using your authority with your pack, butI blinked, astonished that he would even dream of starting in on this one. What?If you discountt or wont condition Leah, then I Leah? I off-and-on(a), speaking through my teeth. What happened?Edwards face was hard. She came up to see why youd left so abruptly. I essay to e xplain. I suppose it might not have come out right. What did she do?She phased to her human form and Really? I interrupted again, shocked this time. I couldnt process that. Leah letting her defense down right in the mouth of the enemys hideout? She wanted to speak to Bella. To Bella?Edward got all hissy then. I wont let Bella be upset like that again. I dont care how justified Leah thinks she is I didnt hurt her of prey I wouldnt but Ill throw her out of the house if it happens again. Ill plant her right across the river Hold on. What did she regularize? no(prenominal) of this was making any sense.Edward took a deep breath, typography himself. Leah was unnecessarily harsh. Im not going to pretend that I understand why Bella is unable to let go of you, but I do know that she does not behave this way to hurt you. She suffers a undischarged deal over the pain shes inflicting on you, and on me, by contending you to stay. What Leah said was uncalled for. Bellas been crying po stponement Leah was yelling at Bella about me?He nodded one sharp nod. You were quite vehemently championed.Whoa. I didnt ask her to do that.I know.I rolled my eyes. Of course he knew. He knew everything. But that was really something about Leah. Who would have believed it? Leah walking into the bloodsuckers place human to animadvert about how /was being treated.I arouseistert promise to control Leah, I told him. I wont do that. But Ill talk to her, okay? This ones on me.I already told her that.Of course you did. Is she okay?Shes dormancy now. move is with her.So the psycho was Rose now. Hed in all crossed over to the dark side.He snub that thought, continuing with a more complete live on up to my question. Shes better in some ways. off from Leahs throwaway and the resulting gui lt.Better. Because Edward was hearing the monster and everything was all lovey-dovey now. Fantastic. Its a bit more than that, he murmured. Now that I throw out make out the chelas thoughts, its apparent that he or she has remarkably developed mental facilities. He can understand us, to an extent. My mouth fell open. argon you grievous?Yes. He seems to have a vague sense of what hurts her now. Hes trying to empty that, as much as possible. He loves her. Already.I stared at Edward, feeling sort of like my eyes might pop out of their sockets. Underneath that disbelief, I could see right away that this was the critical factor. This was what had changed Edward that the monster had convinced him of this love. He couldnt abhor what loved Bella. It was probably why he couldnt detest me, either. There was a bigdifference, though. I wasnt kill her.Edward went on, acting like he hadnt heard all that. The progress, I believe, is more than wed judged. When Carlisle returns Theyre not bac k? I cut in sharply. I thought of surface-to-air missile and Jared, watching the road. Would they get curious as to what was going on?Alice and Jasper are. Carlisle sent all the blood he was able to acquire, but it wasnt as much as he was hoping for Bella will use up this furnish in another day the way her relish has grown. Carlisle stayed to try another source. I dont think thats indispensable now, but he wants to be covered for any eventuality. Why isnt it necessary? If she needs more?I could tell he was watching and listening to my reply carefully as he explained. Tm trying to persuade Carlisle to deliver the baby as soon as he is back. What? The child seems to be acting to parry rough cases, but its difficult. Hes become too big. Its rage to wait, when hes clearly developed beyond what Carlisle had guessed. Bellas too little(a) to delay.I kept getting my legs knocked out from under me. First, counting on Edwards hatred of the thing so much. Now, Id realized that I thought of those four days as a sure thing. Id banked on them. The perpetual ocean of grief that waited stretched out before me.I tried to catch my breath.Edward waited. I stared at his face while I recovered, recognizing another change there. You think shes going to make it, I whispered.Yes. That was the other thing I wanted to talk to you about.I couldnt say anything. After a minute, he went on.Yes, he said again. Waiting, as we have been, for the child to be ready, that was deucedly dangerous. At any moment it could have been too late. But if were proactive about this, if we act quickly, I see no reason why it should not go well. Knowing the childs mind is unbelievably helpful. Thankfully, Bella and Rose agree with me. Now that Ive convinced them its safe for the child if we proceed, theres nothing to keep this from working. When will Carlisle be back? I asked, still whispering. I hadnt got my breath back yet.By noon tomorrow. My knees buckled. I had to grab the car to hold myself up. Edw ard reached out like he was fling support, but then he thought better of it and recordped his hands.Im moody, he whispered. I am truly sorry for the pain this causes you, Jacob. Though you dislike me, I must admit that I dont feel the same about you. I think of you as a a brother in many ways. A cussin arms, at the very least. I tribulation your suffering more than you realize. But Bella is going to brave when he said that his voice was fierce, even godforsaken and I know thats what really matters to you.He was probably right. It was hard to tell. My head was spinning. So I hate to do this now, while youre already dealing with too much, but, clearly, there is little time. I have to ask you for something to beg, if I must.I dont have anything left, I clotted out.He lifted his hand again, as if to put it on my shoulder, but then let it drop like before and sighed.I know how much you have given, he said quietly. But this is something you do have, and only you. Im asking this of the true Alpha, Jacob. Im asking this of Ephraims heir.I was way past being able to respond.I want your permission to deviate from what we agreed to in our treaty with Ephraim. I want you to grant us an exception. I want your permission to save her life. You know 111 do it anyway, but I dont want to break faith with you if there is any way to avoid it. We never intended to go back on our word, and we dont do it lightly now. I want your understanding, Jacob, because you know exactly why we do this. I want the alliance between our families to survive when this is over.I tried to swallow. Sam, I thought. Its Sam you want.No. Sams authority is assumed. It belongs to you. Youll never take it from him, but no one can rightfully agree to what Im asking except for youIts not my decision. It is, Jacob, and you know it. Your word on this will chasten us or absolve us. Only you can give this to me.cant think. I dont know.We dont have much time. He glanced back toward the house. No, there was no time. My few days had become a few hours.dont know. Let me think. effective give me a minute here, okay?Yes.I started walking to the house, and he followed. Crazy how easy it was, walking through the dark with a vampire right beside me. It didnt feel unsafe, or even uncomfortable, really. It felt like walking next to anybody. Well, anybody who smelled bad. There was a movement in the brush at the edge of the big lawn, and then a low whimper. Seth shrugged through the ferns and loped over to us.Hey, kid, I muttered. He dipped his head, and I patted his shoulder.Sall cool, I lied. Ill tell you about it later. Sorry to take off on you like that.He grinned at me.Hey, tell your sister to back off now, okay? Enough.Seth nodded once.I shoved against his shoulder this time. Get back to work. Ill spell you in a bit.Seth leaned against me, shoving back, and then he galloped into the trees. He has one of the purest, sincerest, kindest minds Ive ever heard, Edward murmured when he was outof s ight. Youre lucky to have his thoughts to share.I know that, grunted. We started toward the house, and both of our heads snapped up when we heard the sound of someone suction through a straw. Edward was in a zip then.He darted up the porch stairs and was gone.Bella, love, Ithought you were sleeping, I heard him say. Im sorry, I wouldnt have left.Dont worry. Ijust got so thirsty it woke me up.Its a good thing Carlisle is bringing more. This kid is going to need it when he gets out of me.True. Thats a good point.I wonder if hell want anything else, she mused.I suppose well find out.I walked through the door.Alice said, Finally, and Bellas eyes flashed to me. That infuriating, irresistible smile broke across her face for one second. Then it faltered, and her face fell. Her lips puckered, like she was trying not to cry.I wanted to punch Leah right in her stupid mouth.Hey, Bells, Isaid quickly. How ya doing?Im fine, she said.Big day today, huh? Lots of new stuff. You dont have to do tha t, Jacob.Dont know what youre talking about, I said, going to sit on the arm of the sofa by her head. Edward had the floor there already. She gave me a reproachful look. Im so s she started to say.I pinched her lips together between my thumb and finger.Jake, she mumbled, trying to pull my hand away. Her attempt was so weak it was hard to believe that she was really trying.I shook my head. You can talk when youre not being stupid. very well,I wont say it, it sounded like she mumbled.I pulled my hand away.Sorry she finished quickly, and then grinned.I rolledmy eyes and then smiled back at her. When I stared into her eyes, I saw everything that Id been looking for in the park.Tomorrow, shed be someone else. But hopefully alive, and that was what counted, right? Shed look at me with the same eyes, sort of. Smile with the same lips, almost. Shed still know me better than anyone who didnt havefull access to the inside of my head.Leah might be an interesting companion, maybe even a true fr iend someone who would stand up for me. Butshe wasnt my best friend the way thatBella was. Aside from the impossible love I felt for Bella, there was also that other bond, and it ran bone deep.Tomorrow, shed be my enemy. Or shed be myally. And, apparently, that distinction was up to me.I sighed.FineI thought, giving up the very suffer thing i had to give. It made me feel hollow. Go ahead. Save her. As Ephraims heir, you have my permission, my word, that this will not violate the treaty. The others will just have to deuced me. You were right they cant deny that its my right to agree to this.Thank you. Edwards whisper was low enough that Bella didnt hear anything. But the words were so fervent that, from the corner of my eye, I saw the other vampires turning to stare. So,Bella asked, working to be casual. How was your day?Great. Went for a drive. Hung out in the park.Sounds nice.Sure, sure.Suddenly, she made a face. Rose? she asked.I heard Blondie chuckle. Again?I think Ive drunk t wo gallons in the last hour, Bella explained.Edward and I both got out of the way while Rosalie came to lift Bella from the couch and take her to the bathroom. brook I walk? Bella asked. My legs are so stiff. Are you sure? Edward asked.Rosellcatch me if I trip over my feet. Which could happen pretty easily, since I cant see them.Rosalie set Bellacarefully on her feet, keeping her hands right atBellas shoulders. Bella stretched her arms out in front of her, wincing a little. That feels good, she sighed. Ugh, but Im huge. She really was. Her stomach was its own continent. One more day, she said, and patted her stomach.I couldnt help the pain that shot through me in a sudden, stabbing burst, but I tried to keep it off my face. I could hide it for one more day, right? All righty, then. Whoops oh, noThe cup Bella had left on the sofa tumbled to one side, the dark red blood spilling out onto the pale fabric.Automatically, though three other hands beat her there, Bella bent over, reaching out to catch it.There was the strangest, sluggish ripping sound from the center of her body.Oh she gasped. And then she went exclusively limp, slumping toward the floor. Rosalie caught her in the same instant, before she could fall. Edward was there, too, hands out, the upsurge on the sofa forgotten.Bella? he asked, and then his eyes unfocused, and panic shot across his features.A half second later,Bella screamed.Itwas not justa scream, it was a blood-curdling shriek of agony. The abominable sound cut off with a gurgle, and her eyes rolled back into her head. Her body twitched, arched in Rosalies arms, and then Bella vomited a fountain of blood.
