Role of Clothing in Communication
Role of Clothing in Communication Clothing is a language, a nonverbal system of communication that through its symbols conveys much about the wearer to the viewer. Before people speak to one another, their clothing makes a statement that expresses their sex, age, class, occupation, origin and personality, as well as what they are or what they want to be at a particular moment. A businessperson is recognized in a well tailored suit. Fashion can suggest or signal status in a social group. Groups with high cultural status like to keep in fashion to display their position; people who do not keep in fashion within a so-called style tribe can risk shunning. Because keeping in fashion often requires considerable amounts of money, fashion can be used to show off wealth (compare conspicuous consumption). Adherence to fashion trends can thus form an index of social affluence and an indicator of social mobility. Humans often wear articles ofÃâà clothingÃâà (also known asÃâà Apparel,Ãâà dress,Ãâà garmentsÃâà orÃâà attire) on the body . In its broadest sense, clothing includes coverings for the trunk and limbs as well as coverings for hands (gloves), feet (shoes,Ãâà sandals,Ãâà boots), and head (hats, caps). Articles carried rather than worn (likeÃâà pursesÃâà and umbrellas) normally count as accessories rather than as clothing. Humans also decorate their bodies with makeup or cosmetics, perfume,Ãâà jewelryÃâà and other ornament; cut, dye, and arrange their head and body hair (hairstyle), and sometimes their skin (tattoo, scarifications, piercing). All these decorations contribute to the overall effect and message of clothing, but do not constitute clothing per se. People wear clothing for functional and/or social reasons. Clothing protects the body; it also delivers social messages to other humans. Function includes protection of the body against strong sunlight, extreme heat or cold, and precipitation; protection against insects, noxious chemicals, weapons, contact with abrasive substances in sum, against anything that might injure an unprotected human body. Humans have shown extreme inventiveness in devising clothing solutions to practical problems. See: armor,Ãâà diving suit, bee-keepers costume, motorcycle leathers,Ãâà high-visibility clothing. Social messages sent by clothing, accessories, and decorations can involve social status, occupation, ethnic and religious affiliation, marital status and sexual availability, etc. Humans must know the code in order to recognize the message transmitted. If different groups read the same item of clothing or decoration with different meanings, the wearer may provoke unanticipated responses. Social status: in many societies, people of high rank reserve special items of clothing or decoration for themselves. Only Roman emperors could wear garments dyeed with Tyrian purple; only high-ranking Hawaiian chiefs could wear feather cloaks and palaoa or carved whale teeth. In other societies, no laws prohibit lower-status people wearing high statusÃâà garments, but the high cost of status garments effectively limits purchase and display. In current Western society, only the rich can affordÃâà haute couture. The threat of social ostracism may also limit garment choice. Occupation: military, police, firefighters usually wearÃâà uniforms, as do workers in many industries. School-children often wearÃâà school uniforms, college and university students wear academic dress. Members of religious orders may wear uniforms known as habits. Sometimes a single item of clothing or a single accessory can declare ones occupation and/or status for example, the highÃâà toqueÃâà or chefs hat worn by a chief cook. Ethnic, political, and religious affiliation: In many regions of the world, styles in clothing and ornament declare membership in a certain village, caste, religion, etc. A Scotsman declares his clan with hisÃâà tartan; an Orthodox Jew his religion with his (non-clothing) sidelocks; a French peasant woman her village with her cap orÃâà coif. Clothes can also proclaim dissent from cultural norms and mainstream beliefs, as well as personal independence. In 19th century Europe, artists and writers livedÃâà la vie de Bohe meÃâà and dressed to shock: George Sand in mens clothing, female emancipationists in bloomers, male artists in velvet waistcoats and gaudy neckcloths. Bohemians, beatniks, hippies, Goths, and punks continued the ( counter-cultural) tradition in the 20th century West. Now thatÃâà haute coutureÃâà plagiarises street fashion within a year or so, street fashion may have lost some of its power to shock, but it still motivates millions trying to look hip and cool. People such as inventor Dean Kamen or film director Peter Jackson wear simple functional clothing to distance themselves from the establishment (and possibly to attract additional attention). Marital status: Hindu women, once married, wearÃâà sindoor, a red powder, in the parting of their hair; if widowed, they abandonÃâà sindoorÃâà and jewelry and wear simple white clothing. Men and women of the Western world may wear wedding rings to indicate their marital status. Sexual availability: Some clothing indicates the modesty of the wearer. For example, many Muslim women wear a head or body covering (hijab, bourqa orÃâà burka,Ãâà chador,Ãâà abaya) that proclaims their status as respectable women. Other clothing may indicate flirtatious intent. For example, a Western woman might wear extreme stiletto heels, close-fitting and body-revealing black or red clothing, exaggerated make-up, flashy jewelry and perfume to show sexual availability. What constitutes modesty and allurement varies radically from culture to culture, within different contexts in the same culture, and over time as differentÃâà fashionsÃâà rise and fall. Moreover, a person may choose to display a mixed message.Ãâà For example, a Saudi Arabian woman may wear anÃâà abayaÃâà to proclaim her respectability, but choose an abaya of luxurious material cut close to the body and then accessorize withÃâà high heelsÃâà and a fashionable purse. Al l the details proclaim sexual desirability, despite the ostensible message of respectability. Similarly, a Japanese schoolgirl may wear the required school uniform in a way (skirts waistband rolled to shorten the skirt, long sleeves rolled up) that says sexy schoolgirl rather than good girl.

A History Of The British Labour Party Politics Essay
A History Of The British Labour Party Politics Essay The Labour Party is a political party in Great Britain that is just about 110 years old. The party was formed in 1900 as an outgrowth of the trade union movement and to change Parliaments interests. The reason the Labour Party wanted Parliament changed was because the people who formed the party felt that Parliament was not representing the interests of everybody in Britain. The people who felt neglected by Parliament were hard working people, socialists, and unionists. During the early stages, the Labour party struggled to make an immediate impact in Britains political system and the partys leaders had to do something about their struggle. The Labours leaders worked with Liberal Governments during 1906-1914 to help themselves gain some form of political ground. The Liberal parties eventually split in 1916 and the Labour Party saw this as a perfect opportunity to obtain power. The 1918 election proved a pivotal point for the Labour Party and even though they did not win the general e lection, they came away with one-quarter of the vote. The reason the 1918 election was so successful for the Labours was because of World War I coming to an end and the growth of womens suffrage. On December 6, 1923, the Labour Party won the general election and finally reached the major political office for the first time in its partys history. The party only held office for a few months under Ramsay MacDonald, and failed to get reelected for a second term. A main reason for the party not getting reelected was because of the Zinoviev letter. The letter was published in British press stating that there were connections between Russian Communists and the Labour Party. Due to anti-communism in Great Britain, the Labours lost the 1924 election as well as 40 seats in the House of Commons. The Zinoviev letter later turned out to be forgery, but the damage was already done to the Labour Party. The Labour Party would rebound later in 1929, but the major election they won came in 1945. The crucial election followed after the Second World War. When the war ended in May 1945, Winston Churchill called for a general election a few months later in July. The Labour Party was running under the slogan of Let Us Face the Future, and its message was that Britain cannot return to poverty and unemployment like the 1930s. The Labour Party also promised to remove disease, want, squalor, ignorance, and unemployment. The Labours ended up winning in a landslide and this presented the party with the opportunity of making significant changes for Great Britain. After the crucial election in 1945, the Labour Party once again was elected in 1950 and this marked the first time in the Partys history where they won consecutive elections. Following the 1950 election, the Labour Party would only be in office for around 14 years till 1997. The Conservative Party dominated the general elections, winning three consecutive terms in 1951-1959 and four consecutive terms in 1979-1992. This was a result of internal fighting of the Labour Party and as a consequence, people detached from the party to form the Social Democratic Party in 1981. All of these effects left the Labour Party out of dominance for nearly three decades and would not come back to power until Labour Party candidate Tony Blair was up for election. Blair had become the party leader in 1994 and won the 1997 general election in a landslide. Blairs term was also called the New Labour because it was seen as a separation from the old Labour for having different policies such as one known as the Third Way. The New Labour term was proven to be the right fit for Blair because he won the next two elections and this became the Labour Partys first time winning three cons ecutive elections. Blair did not become very popular with Great Britain and its citizens because of his stance on the Iraq War. Blair ended up resigning on June 27, 2007 and Gordon Brown was handed the Prime Minister position after Blairs resignation. Gordon Brow was the Chancellor of the Exchequer during Blairs term as Prime Minister of Great Britain. The Chancellor of the Exchequer is a Cabinet position responsible for all economic and financial matters. The economy was one of the main concerns for both Blair and Brown, but Blair had to overcome Thatcherism and implement a new strategy for fixing the economy. There were many ideological platforms that Blair ran during the 10 years of being Prime Minister, but one of the main ones was reworking the economy. The way Blair

Richard Nixon is known as the 37th president that resigned from office. I am going to tell you the whole story. Nixon was born in 1913 in Yorba Linda, California, the second of five sons of Francis Nixon and Hannah Nixon. The Nixons were Scots-Irish and the Milhouses were of Irish and English descent, known as Quakers. Richard Nixon attended public schools in Whittier, California, and went to Whittier College, a Quaker institution, where he majored in history. He won a scholarship to Duke University Law School and received his law degree in 1937. Nixon joined an established law firm in Whittier and there met his future wife, Thelma Ryan. They married on June 21, 1940, and had two daughters, Patricia in 1946 and Julie in 1948. à à à à à In 1946 Nixon was persuaded by California Republicans to be their candidate to challenge the popular Democratic Congressman Jerry Voorhis for his seat in the United States House of Representatives. Nixonââ¬â¢s campaign was an example of the vigorous and aggressive style characteristic of his political career. He accused Voorhis of being soft on Communism. The two men confronted each other in a series of debates, and Voorhis was forced into a defensive position. Nixon won the election by a vote of 65,586 to 49,994. As a new member of the Congress of the United States, Nixon gained valuable experience in international affairs while serving on a special committee that helped establish the European Recovery Program. Nixon also served on the House of Education and Labor Committee, where he helped draft the Taft-Hartley Act on labor-management relations. à à à à à In 1948, he was reelected to Congress after winning both the Republican and Democratic nominations. In 1950 the Republicans chose Nixon as their candidate for the U.S. Senate from California. His opponent was the liberal Congresswoman Helen Gahagan Douglas. In another bitterly fought campaign, Nixon linked her voting record with American-Labor-Party congressman Vito Marcantonio, who was widely regarded as pro-Communist. Nixon won the election by 680,000 votes. à à à à à In 1952 Nixon was selected to be the running mate of General Dwight Eisenhower, who had won the Republican presidential nomination. Shortly after Nixonââ¬â¢s vice-presidential nomination it was reported that a fund had been collected to meet his expenses as a senator. No evidence was produced that Nixon had misused the fund or given special favors to contributors, but many of Eisenhowerââ¬â¢s advisers wanted Nixon to resign his candidacy.

journalism Essay -- essays research papers
A journalist is someone who works in the news gathering business, such as a photographer, editor or reporter. Journalism is all around us. It dominates television and surrounds us in the vast publishing industry of popularization. Journalism influence our perspectives on issues concerning us. In other words, its undeniable that journalism has a deep impact on our lives. There are two sides to journalism ââ¬â good journalism and bad journalism. According to K. Minogue, the journalist has the power to mould the information they receive into ââ¬Å"propagandaâ⬠or they could just report the news with additions of both side of the story. Journalism could even cause a political uproar like uncovering the Watergate scandal that forced President Nixon of the USA from office in 1974. Hence, it is very important that a journalist follow a code of ethics to maintain peace and harmony among the people. à à à à à I agree that even though journalists are said to have a freedom of expression or speech, they still have to have public responsibilities. In Singapore, we journalist have to watch what we say in delicate matters like September 11 attacks and the current Japanese ââ¬â China issue. The September 11 attacks may cause our society to be more weary of the Muslims in our society. As journalists, we must we careful not to generalize that all Muslims are extremists. What we can do is to ask our Muslim community on their opinion on the terroristsââ¬â¢ acts and publish it in the news. Since Singapore is a cosmopolitan city, racial and religious matters must be treated diplomatically and fairly. The other races would then be able to understand the Muslims better. Understanding each other would really help nation building as there is social cohesion and thus Singapore would be a peaceful and harmonious home for all. Honesty is another aspect which is very significant. Journalists should observe the common standards of decency and stand accountable to the public for the honesty and accuracy of their news reports. A journalist should not modify or influence any information that goes into their hands. They could do so by using suggestive words and withholding necessary information. Many a time journalists try to create a hype or to make their paper sell like hotcakes by compromising honesty. In Singapore, it is written in the Singapore Jou... ...ght to a certain extent for journalism around the world especially Singapore. Australia and Singapore differ in culture and governance, hence some of the principles may not work in the latter country. Singapore has to provide more protection in journalism to preserve the diverse culture she has. Thus its natural for the government to be more strict by imposing fines if a journalist publish unethical news. This would strengthen the bond of trust of the people in Singapore. References: Goh C. Bloom’s Research and Response
Bloom's Research and Response Bloom's Research and Response Benjamin Bloom developed Bloomââ¬â¢s Taxonomy of Education in 1956. It is a teaching system developed to classify learning objectives and skills (Larkin & Burton, 2008). Lori Anderson and David Krathwohl revised the original publication- Bloomââ¬â¢s Taxonomy of Educational objectives and also added new knowledge and ideas to the original material. This is the handbook in use by educators today. The Educational objectives that Bloom developed he categorized into three domains: Cognitive, Affective, and Psychomotor. Each domain has its own set of specific expectations. Bloom broke down his taxonomy into different levels of complexity. They are arraigned in a hierarchy from less to more complex. When teaching, the educator will use the levels so that mastery of the first level is necessary by the learner before the next level can be achieved. The Cognitive Domain focuses on knowledge and developing the skills of comprehens ion, it also uses critical thinking skills. There are six levels of complexity in this Domain: Knowledge, Comprehension, Application, Analysis, Synthesis, and Evaluation. The Affective Domain focuses on how the learner deals with emotions and with his ability to feel empathy for others. Bloom broke down this domain into five levels: Receiving (awareness), Responding (active participation in the learning process), Valuing, Organization, and Internalizing (values held that influence a behavior so it becomes a characteristic). The third domain, the Psychomotor Domain was not broken down into subcategories by Bloom but by Simpson in 1972. The Psychomotor Domain focuses on the ability to manipulate an object physically. This domain has seven levels: Perception, Set (readiness to act), Guided Response, Mechanism, Complex Overt Response (the ability to perform without hesitation), Adaptation, and Origination. When used, Bloomââ¬â¢s Taxonomy will provide the educator with a measurable way to assess the level of comprehension of the taught information by the learner (ââ¬Å"Big Dog and Little Dogââ¬â¢s Performance Juxtaposition,â⬠2010). Nurses can use Bloomââ¬â¢s teaching method in educating patients with chronic diseases. First the nurse must assess the patient for level of understanding and readiness to learn. The nurse uses the Cognitive Domain to teach the patient about his specific disease and to facilitate understanding of all concepts associated with the disease and its treatments. In following the hierarchy the nurse would start with the simplest information and ideas and increase the complexity of the information after the patient has exhibited comprehension of the previously taught material. Using the Affective Domain the nurse helps the patient deal with his emotions related to his diagnosis and to attach a value to it.Once a patient has processed the information given to him, realizes the importance of managing his care and placing a value on it s importance, he is ready to use the psychomotor domain. The educator uses the Psychomotor domain to teach the skills portion of education. Diabetics need to learn how to use blood glucose testing equipment; patients may need to learn how to self-catheterize these are just two examples of skills that nurses teach that fall under this domain. There are many areas of education a nurse teaches daily. One of which is the information given to patients with chronic diseases in order for them to achieve or maintain self-sufficiency. Bloomââ¬â¢s teaching method gives those patients the best chance at mastering the necessary information and skills needed to live day-to-day with a chronic illness. Compare and contrast the narrative techniques used in three or more of Edgar Allan Poeââ¬â¢s tales Essay
Edgar e rattlingan Poe was natural in Boston on January nineteenth 1809. He became a writer contrary galore(postnominal) others at that time, writing stores of horror or horror books. Several flock say his disturbing and unusual stories were the solvent of his have got living and situations he had been finished, and although he was an Ameri freighter, his writing toughenedly followed in the sheaths of European chivalric stories. A nonher sheath of gothic literature in the nineteenth century was Dracula wrote by Bram fire fighter (1897), this genre of horror and torment has rebrinyed to be popular until the present day, with modern authors such as James Herbert and Stephen King. The Cask of Amontillado is a forgetful gothic bal championy wrote by Edgar tot whollyyan Poe, ab give away the bank clerk named Montresor, describing how his fri annul Fortunato has anger him repeatedly in the past, and how he is presently planning to seek avenge upon him. utilise a vintage amontillado as h elderly in he guides him d own to the catacombs below his augury where a space in the groyne has been created as a tomb. Locking the padlock, which strapped Fortunato who is without delay in a drunken res publica to the catacomb wall, he uncovers a pile of cement and bricks from beneath a mound of cram lying nearby, and row-by-row he begins to bury him alive, fetching great amusement and satisf bodily function out of his crying. The spread abroad account inwardness is over again a nonher famous piece of gothic literature wrote by Edgar Allan Poe, it constitutes a en garde man proclaiming that he is non insane, neertheless has a fascination with destroying what he believes to be an malign nitty-gritty. The beginning of the hi tommyrot begins with a flashback of when the old man was killed, at present from this point we become awargon that the narrator is actually mad, even though he continuously challenges the fact that this is not true. The telescope of the gothic literature The Cask of Amontillado plays an important role with the unwrapment of horror and tightness necessary for the referee to have. The horizontal surface is ideally set in catacombs under the of import graphic symbol Montresors set up the walls argon covered with gay b mavins, which conterminously sets the scene for a gothic paper. The intense comment of the setting in this written report is very hesitationful and eerie. Edgar Allan Poe describes the men passing through walls of piled bones, with casks and puncheons intermingling, into the in close to recesses of the catacombs. The catacombs of death in this legend provide an appropriate setting for the taradiddles suspense and inevitable ending. The commonplace mood of the study is one of be infernal, this mood is significantly overhauled by the de finition of the location and phrases that have been purposely chosen by the author such as, the drops of moisture dribbling among the bones and its walls had been lined with compassionate bes remains. The Tell bosh Heart is another tale besides wrote by Edgar Allan Poe, it is set in a contrastive era as the author describes the percentage using lanterns and they have no electrical energy in the house, I put in a riff-black lantern. We in akin manner k in a flash that they ar in a hostile old house, from midnight to four in the morning. It is sliminess in the bed direction as the shutters atomic number 18 closed from fear of burglars his room was as black as switch with chummy darkness (for the shutters were closed fastened, through fear of robbers). It is not clear but the setting for this storey is probably European, as at the ending of the story Edgar Allan Poe describes officers of the police that appear knocking on the door policemen atomic number 18 ge nerally associated with England and Europe.Another congresswoman of a sinister setting in one of Edgar Allan Poes gothic stories is The cavum and the Pendulum. The story is set in Spain during the Spanish pursuit at some point in the sixteenth century, and begins in a homage where the shoplifter is listening to his death time by black robed judges. This is where the address basic realises his fate, and Edgar Allan Poe uses simple speech and phrases to exemplify his foreseeable fate, I trace these linguistic communication and minute even to grotesqueness thin with the intensity of their expression of firmness of unmovable resolution of stern contempt of human torture. For the remainder of the story the location is in a cell or prison underground, the narrator is in pitch black the blackness of eternal night encompassed me, he is degage in the cell, be tormented and under examination by the Spanish army. The setting in this story shows the conditions the part is subje cted to, the pit in the shopping centre of the floor was intended for his death, though he tripped and exposed the ditch. Now subject to much torture, he is beneath a wavering pendulum, bit by bit moving closer towards his body. The floor is covered in rats as Poe portrays them as fresh troops, hurriedly, with ravenous eyeball, which again adds to the disturbing setting of this story, which in turn helps the subscriber examine the situation the voice is in.In all of these gothic stories wrote by Edgar Allan Poe, he has chosen to use a sinister setting, frequently in an obscure place such as the catacombs or a prison cell. As for each one story changes and develops, so do the surroundings, becoming more dark and threatening. In these triple wretched stories Edgar Allan Poe uses certain regions to fix up and develop the story. The main character in each story is called the genius, and the antagonist is the character who ordinarily fights against him. In The Cask of Amon tillado, the star in Montresor, as he is the main character and also the narrator, he forms most(prenominal) of the story with the theme of his revenge. During the story Montresor explains what happened the night Fortunato was killed. Montresor is also perceived through the drool to be very in rateigent, since he turn over the murder so that no one would discover his plans, we can also tell of his intelligence by what he verbalize to Fortunato. He asked for assistance in wine-coloured tasting, but says if he is busy he will ask Luchesi , this causes Fortunato want to help even more as Montresor is now using reverse psychology on him, as you ar engaged, I am on my way to see Luchesi. If anyone has a critical turn, it is he. He will tell me.Montresor knew that burying him alive would give the surmount reward in form of revenge, and the superior satisfaction and ful contractent for him. Since the story is wrote in set-back person the author does not give a precise explanati on of Montresor as it is though the author is retelling the story. We ar told even his feelings and emotions and the reader is then go away form their own opinions on this character through studying their attitudes and actions. For manikin it is very clear to the reader Montresors despise towards Fortunato plus his determination for vengeance. The antagonist in The Cask of Amontillado is Fortunato, as he fights for his deportment and is the opposition of the protagonist. The consultations recognition of the character has to be again goaded from Montresors thoughts and feelings. Montresors opinion at the start of the story is evil and fearful towards him as he has offended him in the past, although the reader may agree with this at the beginning, near the end we begin to realize with Fortunato for beingness under torture.Much standardised the Cask of Amontillado, the story The Tell tosh Heart has both a protagonist and an antagonist. The protagonist in this story is t he narrator, we do not jazz his name but he is a servant in the house for the old man. From the opening of the story the character is seeking to persuade the audience that he is not insane, because he believes he is exceedingly intellectual for slaughtering the evil eye. Later on in the story it comes app atomic number 18nt to the audience that this man is in reality insane, proof of this comes at the end when he believes he can hear the old mans heartbeat, It was a low, dull, quick healthful much a sound a watch exacts when enveloped in cotton. From the description in the rehearsal we can understand the narrators fear of the eye as he gives a detailed portrayal he describes it as one of his eyes resembled that of a marauder a pale blue eye, with a film over it. Whenever it fell upon me, my blood ran icy and so by degrees very gradually I made up my foreland to take the life of the old man, and and so rid myself of the eye for ever. Edgar Allan Poe does not give a in persp icaciousness description of the antagonist, however we do know that he is an old man and that he has cataracts on his eyes, this is what is making the narrator imply that they are evil. We are left with our own interpretation of what the man is homogeneous. We are however given a clue, which is that, we now that he is a pleasant man from the extract He had never wronged me. He had never given me insult. once more handle the Cask of Amontillado the story is wrote in graduation exercise person and is although the author is retelling the story. In The match and the Pendulum there is only one main character, this is the man who has heard his death condemn and is now being tortured in the prison, and he is also the narrator recounting what has happened to him. The only other characters in the story are the Spanish army who are torturing the man. The protagonist begins the story with a recollection if a previous examination in which he now finds himself in a dungeon room being hel d capture. Throughout the story the character is face up with many situations for congressman mental and animal(prenominal) torture also facing death many times until eventually he is saved and released by the French army. Again like The Cask of Amontillado and The Tell chronicle Heart, the Pit and the Pendulum is wrote in showtime person, and therefore gives the sum of the author retelling the story. All ternary of these stories share the same exercise of how the characters are use and represented in the gothic stories. Edgar Allan Poe has firstly chose to wrote all of the tales in first person achieving the effect of him retelling the story as if it has actually happened before to him, projection this has left the reader to make their own analysis and judgements active the characters, leaving uncertainties about the characters never actually knowing who they are and what they are like.Themes are very important in creating the right mood for a gothic story they are apply in all three of the short gothic stories by Edgar Allan Poe. It is very harsh of this genre to have themes of good versus evil, and light versus dark. The Cask of Amontillado is a virile tale of revenge. Montresor, the sinister narrator of this story, pledges revenge upon Fortunato for a past insult. At this time we also see many other themes intercommunicate to the reader by using Montresor, for example death, satisfaction and horror. He wanted to be satisfied that he had full revenge upon Fortunato we know this from the choice of torture which was slow and thorough, watching him suffer. The themes in The Cask of Amontillado are also shown using the setting of the story. When the devil characters enter the catacombs, the setting represents the theme of death and horror as the tombs are describe with key adjectives as being lined with human remains and the drops of moisture trickle among the bones. In The Tell report Heart, Edgar Allan Poe has utilise very strong themes of mur der, fear and insanity. The main theme in this gothic story is fear and this is in the main presented through the protagonist. The protagonist has been used to show his fear for the eye, which is often described through the way he talks and describes it as evil, one of his eyes resembled that of a marauder. Other main themes in this story are insanity and madness, immediately at the beginning of the story the narrator challenges that he isnt mad How, then, am I mad?, nevertheless as the story continues we begin to see more of his mental illness awaiting the end of the story when the protagonist is drove exceedingly mad by the old mans heartbeat that he confesses his crime. The themes in this story are also presented though the characters, setting and actions. The theme of fear is shown through actions in the story the main action taken place is murdering the old man, and the dissection of his body. From this we are able to see that the man feared the eyes so much, that he has to rid himself of the eye forever and take the old mans life. panic is also represented through symbolism in the story, the author has made indisputable that the eye is illuminated in a wicked and fearful way, making sure that the audience understands the protagonists fear for the eye, and is also why the author chooses to keep his main revolve about on the description of the eye. There are also many themes in The Pit and the Pendulum however the main one being the theme of torture. This is presented through the key character in the story as he is the one being subjected to the suffering. We see his tribulation throughout the story when he is being put through mental and somatic torture. The theme of torment can also be represented through the setting in the tale. The depressing atmosphere of an old, dark damp dungeon in Toledo helps towards the general theme of the story significantly. The writer uses formulates such as damp and ice-cold, all of these helping to establish the them e, as many of them are associated with evil and dire situations. After reading this story you are left with a message never to give up, this is clear in the story as the protagonist by no means hands over his life to death even in the situations he is under.Edgar Allan Poe has used the same techniques for representing the theme in all three of these stories. In each of them he has used the characters, setting, actions and symbolism to decorate and help the audience recognize the varied themes. An additional similarity among these three stories is that they all include a theme of death.By using a frame of news report techniques in all three of these short gothic stories Edgar Allan Poe has been able to make the reader aware of the circumstances the characters are in, being able to do this also makes the story more realistic and pleasurable for the reader. By using first person in all three of these stories it grabs the readers attention pulling them peachy into what is casua lty in the story, making them feel involved. The language in a story is a very important narrative technique used in most gothic literature, and is carefully selected to construct a successful use of resource and to haoma tension this can also be through with various vocabulary and curse structure. The Cask of Amontillado uses language techniques to build suspense and to generate an imagery of the deep dark catacombs. There is use of commas which make pauses is in the text, building up anticipation and adding to the tension, an example of this is when Edgar Allan Poe is describing the passage to the tombs We passed through a present of low arches, descended, passed on, and descended again, arriving at a deep crypt, in which the foulness of the air caused our flambeaux quite a to glow than flame. The author also uses the effect of imagery in his stories this is used to illustrate the setting that the characters are in. An example of this is Walls had been lined with human remains, which produces a dim and wicked atmosphere. Phrases such as these are essential for the readers imagination, it also helps build up the tension amongst the reader as it reminds them of the death that is soon to come later on in the story.Another story, in which Edgar Allan Poe uses language to build the effect of tension and to make the audience more cautious of the situation in the tale, is The Tell storey Heart. Instantly at the opening, there are short sentences that make the audience slow down with their reading, which in turn builds up the tension in the story Object there was none. Passion there was none. I loved the old man. He had never wronged me. Another technique to develop suspense is by using stacks of hyphens for long pauses. These have been used legion(predicate) times throughout the Tell Tale Heart, particularly when the author has to increase anxiety of when the character enters the chamber on the eight night, I undid the lantern cautiously oh, so cautiously cautiously I undid it moreover so much that a case-by-case thin ray fell upon the vulture eye. Imagery has also been used in this story for the description of the eye, the effect this has on the reader makes them wary of the eye as it is described as evil and vulture like. The author has also used imagery when the man enters the bedroom on the eight night, he describes the room and every action by the character, His room was as black as pitch with the thick darkness (for the shutters were close fastened, through fear of robbers), and so I knew that he could not see the opening of the door, and I kept pushing on steady, steadily..The Pit and the Pendulum also has the use of imagery in the language, which is essential for the tale to be appreciate by the reader. The primary concenter in the story is describing the setting this has been done by using many powerful adjectives and adverbs. During the story Edgar Allan Poe has used a list of three commas to slow the text down, for ex ample then silence, and stillness, and night were the universe. in time again similar to the other stories wrote by Edgar Allan Poe, the Pit and the Pendulum uses imagery to build up the tension an example of this is when the character first begins to see the pendulum swinging down steadily down it crept. By repeating the word down it represents the repetitive and continuous swinging of the pendulum from side to side. There is repetition in the Pit and the pendulum to emphasize the point that he is now free from the swinging pendulum, For the moment, at lest, I was free. Free and in the travail of Inquisition There is also initial rhyme of sidelong, shrinking, and slow I slid from the embrace of the mend.To identify a gothic story from a normal tale there are certain factors which you recognize that can tell you the story is going to be of a gothic genre. The Tell Tale Heart has telling features so that the reader knows it is a gothic story, the first of these being is that it has both a protagonist and an antagonist, this is the main character and someone who fights against him. It also includes a subconscious fear that the man has of the evil eye, which continues through the story with heightened emotions, a great deal of terror and suspense. There is a sinister location of an old house quarantined at night, and a theme of life versus death. In the Cask of Amontillado much like the Tell Tale Heart there is also both an antagonist and a protagonist, Fortunato and Montresor. The story is also based on an old superstition of being interred alive, as this is what happens to Fortunato in the catacombs. During the story there is heightened emotions and build up of terror and tension, there is a melodramatic plot and a sinister location of deep underground where no one can hear them in the family tomb. The protagonist in the Pit and the Pendulum is the man who is being tortured, heightened emotions are shown in this story through the terror and fear of deat h. There is lots of melodrama like in the other two stories as the torture is being dragged out. Once again like in many of Edgar Allan Poe stories the setting is very sinister, as he is in a damp black room containing a pit in the middle, covered in rats. There are themes of good versus evil and life versus death in this story. All these factors of the gothic genre are used to recognize and understand these stories, based in selective features which they contain.By looking at the three stories wrote by Edgar Allan Poe, The Pit and the Pendulum, The Tell Tale Heart and the Cask of Amontillado, I can see that there are many similarities between them. The main coincidence is that they have all been wrote in first person, the effect of this is that it draws you into the story and gets the reader involved, I think Edgar Allan Poe has chose to use this on all three of these gothic stories as the reader then has an advantage to understanding what is happening in the tale. Another similar ity between all three of these stories is the setting. In a gothic story the setting is usually sinister and dark as this helps to the general effect the story has on its audience, in each story the location is isolated and usually in a dark room. The use of language is also very similar in these three stories, in each of them there is use of hyphens and short sentences all to build up suspense and tension.

The Twilight Saga 4: Breaking Dawn 17. What Do I Look Like? …

That was the first part of my plan.It seemed to f eature forever, in all probability because I was still on the razor blades, but it actually didnt even aim two hours ahead I was ride northerly into the undefined sprawl that was part Tacoma and part Seattle. I slowed down past, because I in truth wasnt exhausting to exe imposee any innocent bystanders. This was a thickheaded plan. It wasnt exit to work. moreover, as Id searched my head for any way at all to feature out-of-door from the pain, what Leahd give tongue to today had popped in thither. That would go away, you spot, if you slumped. You wouldnt have to hurt over her anymore.Seemed bid mayhap getting your choices taken away from you wasnt the very worst thing in the world. peradventure touch give care this was the very worst thing in the world. But Id seen all the young ladys in La Push and up on the Makah rez and in Forks. I exact a wider hunting range. So how do you look for a random soul chum in a crowd? Well, first, I needed a crowd. So I tooled aro und, looking for a likely spot. I passed a couple of malls, which belike wouldve been pretty nigh tapers to influence girls my age, but I couldnt make myself stop. Did I deficiency to imprint on some girl who hung out in a mall all day?I unbroken handout away north, and it got more and more crowded. Eventually, I found a big super C full of kids and families and skateboards and bikes and kites and picnics and the whole geek. I hadnt noniced till now it was a nice day. Sun and all that. People were out celebrating the easy sky.I parked across two handicapped spots just begging for a ticket and joined the crowd.I walked around for what felt like hours. Long teeming that the sun changed sides in the sky. I stared into the vista of every girl who passed anywhere near me, making myself really look, nonicing who was pretty and who had blue look and who looked good in braces and who had way too more than makeup on. I es phrase to find something interesting or so eac h flavor, so that I would bed for sure that Id really move. Things like This adept had a really straight nose that angiotensin-converting enzyme should pull her hair out of her eye this genius could do lipstick ads if the rest of her case was as perfect as her mouth___sometimes they stared cover charge. Sometimes they looked scared like they were thinking, Who is this big freak plain at me? Sometimes I thought they looked anatomy of interested, but mayhap that was just my ego running wild.Either way, nothing. Even when I met the look of the girl who was no contest the hottest girl in the park and probably in the city, and she stared right back with a speculation that looked like interest, I felt nothing. fair the equivalent desperate drive to find a way out of the pain.As time went on, I started noticing all the wrong things. Bella things. This unitarys hair was the same color. That unitarys look were manner of shaped the same. This ones cheekbones cut across her face in just the same way. That one had the same little crease amid her eyeball which do me wonder what she was worrying close to___That was when I gave up. Because it was beyond foolish to think that I had picked exactly the right place and time and I was divergence to simply walk into my soul mate just because I was so desperate to.It wouldnt make consciousness to find her here, anyway. If surface-to-air missile was right, the best place to find my genetic stop would be in La Push. And, clearly, no one there fit the bill. If Billy was right, thus who knew? What do for a stronger wolf?I wandered back to the car and then slumped against the hood and played with the keys.Maybe I was what Leah thought she was. Some genial of dead culmination that shouldnt be passed on to another generation. Or maybe it was just that my life was a big, cruel joke, and there was no escape from the punch line.Hey, you very well? hullo? You there, with the stolen car.It took me a second to realize that the voice was blab to me, and then another second to decide to raising my head.A familiar-looking girl was pure(a) at me, her grimace kind of anxious. I knew why I recognised her face Id already catalogued this one. Light red-gold hair, fair skin, a few gold-colored freckles sprinkled across her cheeks and nose, and eyes the color of cinnamon. If youre feeling that remorseful over boosting the car, she utter, smiling so that a dimple popped out in her chin, you could always cut into yourself in.Its borrowed, not stolen, I snapped. My voice sounded horrible like Id been crying or something. Embarrassing.Sure, thatW hold up in court.I glowered. You need something? Not really. I was kidding around the car, you know. Its just that you look really upset just intimately something. Oh, hey, Im Lizzie. She held out her hand.I looked at it until she let it fall. at least, she said awkwardly, I was just wondering if I could help. Seemed like you were looking for mort al forward. She gestured toward the park and shrugged.Yeah.She waited.I sighed. I dont need any help. Shes not here.Oh. Sorry.Me, too, I muttered.I looked at the girl again. Lizzie. She was pretty. Nice luxuriant to try to help a grouchy eerie who must seem nuts. Why couldnt she be the one? Why did everything have to be so freaking abstruse? Nice girl, pretty, and sort of funny. Why not? This is a beautiful car, she said. Its really a shame theyre not making them anymore. I mean, the Vantages body styling is gorgeous, too, but theres just something about the Vanquish___Nice girl who knew cars. Wow. I stared at her face harder, wishing I knew how to make it work. Cmon, Jake imprint already.Hows it drive? she needed.Like you wouldnt believe, I told her.She grinned her one-dimple smiling, clearly cheerful to have dragged a half(a)way civil rejoinder out of me, and I gave her a reluctant grimace back. But her smile did nothing about the sharp, acetous blades that raked up and down my body. No matter how much I indirect requested it to, my life was not expiry to come together like that.I wasnt in that healthier place where Leah was headed. I wasnt spillage to be able to fall in love like a normal person. Not when I was shed blood over someone else. Maybe if it was ten old age from now and Bellas heart was long dead and Id hauled myself through the whole grieving process and come out in one piece again maybe then I could offer Lizzie a push in a fast car and blither makes and models and get to know something about her and see if I liked her as a person. But that wasnt going to come on now.Magic wasnt going to save me. I was just going to have to take the torturing like a man. Suck it up.Lizzie waited, maybe hoping I was going to offer her that ride. Or maybe not.Id snap off get this car back to the guy I borrowed it from, I muttered. She smiled again. Glad to hear youre going straight.Yeah, you win over me.She watched me get in the car, still s ort of concerned. I probably looked like someone who was about to drive off a cliff. Which maybe I wouldve, if that kind of moved work for a werewolf. She waved once, her eyes trailing after the car.At first, I drove more moderately on the way back. I wasnt in a rush. I didnt want to go where I was going. endorse to that house, back to that forest. bear to the pain Id run from. Back to being absolutely alone with it.Okay, that was melodramatic. I wouldnt be all alone, but that was a heavy(a) thing. Leah and deform would have to suffer with me. I was glad band wouldnt have to suffer long. Kid didnt deserve to have his peace of mind ruined. Leah didnt, either, but at least it was something she chthonianstood. Nothing new about pain for Leah.I sighed big as I thought about what Leah wanted from me, because I knew now that she was going to get it. I was still pissed at her, but I couldnt ignore the fact that i could make her life easier. And now that I knew her founder I thou ght she would probably do this for me, if our positions were reversed. It would be interesting, at the very least, and strange, too, to have Leah as a confrere as a friend. We were going to get under each others skin a lot, that was for sure. She wouldnt be one to let me wallow, but I thought that was a good thing. Id probably need someone to throw in my butt now and then. But when it came right down to it, she was really the only friend who had any contingency of understanding what I was going through now.I thought of the hunt this morning, and how close our minds had been for that one moment in time. It hadnt been a gloomy thing. Different. A little scary, a little awkward. But also nice in a weird way.I didnt have to be all alone. And I knew Leah was strong enough to face with me the months that were coming. Months and years. It make me tired to think about it. I felt like I was staring out across an ocean that I was going to have to swim from shore to shore before I could res t again. So much time coming, and then so little time before it started. Before I was flung into that ocean. Three and a half more eld, and here I was, wasting that little bit of time I had.I started driving too fast again.I saw surface-to-air missile and Jared, one on either side of the bridle-path like sentinels, as I raced up the avenue toward Forks. They were well hidden in the thick branches, but I was expecting them, and I knew what to look for. I nodded as I blew past them, not some(prenominal)ering to wonder what they do of my day trip.I nodded to Leah and Seth, too, as I cruised up the Cullens driveway. It was startle to get dark, and the clouds were thick on this side of the sound, but I saw their eyes blaze in the glow of the headlights. I would explain to them later. Thered be plenty of time for that.It was a surprise to find Edward waiting for me in the garage. I hadnt seen him away from Bella in days. I could tell from his face that nothing bad had happened to h er. In fact, he looked more peaceful than before. My place upright tightened as I remembered where that peace came from.It was too bad that with all my brooding Id forgotten to wreck the car. Oh well. I probably wouldnt have been able to stand cause to be perceived this car, anyway. Maybe hed guessed as much, and thats why hed lent it to me in the first place.A few things, Jacob, he said as currently as I cut the engine.I took a deep breath and held it for a minute. accordingly, slowly, I got out of the car and threw the keys to him. conveys for the loan, I said sourly. Apparently, it would have to be repaid. What do you want now?Firstly I know how slow you are to using your authority with your pack, butI blinked, astonished that he would even dream of starting in on this one. What?If you discountt or wont condition Leah, then I Leah? I off-and-on(a), speaking through my teeth. What happened?Edwards face was hard. She came up to see why youd left so abruptly. I essay to e xplain. I suppose it might not have come out right. What did she do?She phased to her human form and Really? I interrupted again, shocked this time. I couldnt process that. Leah letting her defense down right in the mouth of the enemys hideout? She wanted to speak to Bella. To Bella?Edward got all hissy then. I wont let Bella be upset like that again. I dont care how justified Leah thinks she is I didnt hurt her of prey I wouldnt but Ill throw her out of the house if it happens again. Ill plant her right across the river Hold on. What did she regularize? no(prenominal) of this was making any sense.Edward took a deep breath, typography himself. Leah was unnecessarily harsh. Im not going to pretend that I understand why Bella is unable to let go of you, but I do know that she does not behave this way to hurt you. She suffers a undischarged deal over the pain shes inflicting on you, and on me, by contending you to stay. What Leah said was uncalled for. Bellas been crying po stponement Leah was yelling at Bella about me?He nodded one sharp nod. You were quite vehemently championed.Whoa. I didnt ask her to do that.I know.I rolled my eyes. Of course he knew. He knew everything. But that was really something about Leah. Who would have believed it? Leah walking into the bloodsuckers place human to animadvert about how /was being treated.I arouseistert promise to control Leah, I told him. I wont do that. But Ill talk to her, okay? And I dont think therell be a repeat. Leahs not one to hold back, so she probably got it all off her chest today.I would say so.Anyway, Ill talk to Bella about it, too. She doesnt need to feel bad. This ones on me.I already told her that.Of course you did. Is she okay?Shes dormancy now. move is with her.So the psycho was Rose now. Shes better in some ways. off from Leahs throwaway and the resulting gui lt.Better. Because Edward was hearing the monster and everything was all lovey-dovey now. Fantastic. Its a bit more than that, he murmured. Now that I throw out make out the chelas thoughts, its apparent that he or she has remarkably developed mental facilities. He can understand us, to an extent. My mouth fell open. argon you grievous?Yes. He seems to have a vague sense of what hurts her now. Hes trying to empty that, as much as possible. He loves her. Already.I stared at Edward, feeling sort of like my eyes might pop out of their sockets. Underneath that disbelief, I could see right away that this was the critical factor. This was what had changed Edward that the monster had convinced him of this love. He couldnt abhor what loved Bella. It was probably why he couldnt detest me, either. There was a bigdifference, though. I wasnt kill her.Edward went on, acting like he hadnt heard all that. The progress, I believe, is more than wed judged. When Carlisle returns Theyre not bac k? I cut in sharply. I thought of surface-to-air missile and Jared, watching the road. Would they get curious as to what was going on?Alice and Jasper are. Carlisle sent all the blood he was able to acquire, but it wasnt as much as he was hoping for Bella will use up this furnish in another day the way her relish has grown. Carlisle stayed to try another source. I dont think thats indispensable now, but he wants to be covered for any eventuality. Why isnt it necessary? If she needs more?I could tell he was watching and listening to my reply carefully as he explained. Tm trying to persuade Carlisle to deliver the baby as soon as he is back. What? The child seems to be acting to parry rough cases, but its difficult. Hes become too big. Its rage to wait, when hes clearly developed beyond what Carlisle had guessed. Bellas too little(a) to delay.I kept getting my legs knocked out from under me. First, counting on Edwards hatred of the thing so much. Now, Id realized that I thought of those four days as a sure thing. Id banked on them. The perpetual ocean of grief that waited stretched out before me.I tried to catch my breath.Edward waited. I stared at his face while I recovered, recognizing another change there. You think shes going to make it, I whispered.Yes. That was the other thing I wanted to talk to you about.I couldnt say anything. After a minute, he went on.Yes, he said again. Waiting, as we have been, for the child to be ready, that was deucedly dangerous. At any moment it could have been too late. But if were proactive about this, if we act quickly, I see no reason why it should not go well. Knowing the childs mind is unbelievably helpful. Thankfully, Bella and Rose agree with me. Now that Ive convinced them its safe for the child if we proceed, theres nothing to keep this from working. When will Carlisle be back? I asked, still whispering. I hadnt got my breath back yet.By noon tomorrow. My knees buckled. I had to grab the car to hold myself up. Edw ard reached out like he was fling support, but then he thought better of it and recordped his hands.Im moody, he whispered. I am truly sorry for the pain this causes you, Jacob. Though you dislike me, I must admit that I dont feel the same about you. I think of you as a a brother in many ways. A cussin arms, at the very least. I tribulation your suffering more than you realize. But Bella is going to brave when he said that his voice was fierce, even godforsaken and I know thats what really matters to you.He was probably right. It was hard to tell. My head was spinning. So I hate to do this now, while youre already dealing with too much, but, clearly, there is little time. I have to ask you for something to beg, if I must.I dont have anything left, I clotted out.He lifted his hand again, as if to put it on my shoulder, but then let it drop like before and sighed.I know how much you have given, he said quietly. But this is something you do have, and only you. Im asking this of the true Alpha, Jacob. Im asking this of Ephraims heir.I was way past being able to respond.I want your permission to deviate from what we agreed to in our treaty with Ephraim. I want you to grant us an exception. I want your permission to save her life. You know 111 do it anyway, but I dont want to break faith with you if there is any way to avoid it. We never intended to go back on our word, and we dont do it lightly now. I want your understanding, Jacob, because you know exactly why we do this. I want the alliance between our families to survive when this is over.I tried to swallow. Sam, I thought. Its Sam you want.No. Sams authority is assumed. It belongs to you. Youll never take it from him, but no one can rightfully agree to what Im asking except for youIts not my decision. It is, Jacob, and you know it. Your word on this will chasten us or absolve us. Only you can give this to me.cant think. I dont know.We dont have much time. He glanced back toward the house. No, there was no time. My few days had become a few hours.dont know. Let me think. effective give me a minute here, okay?Yes.I started walking to the house, and he followed. Crazy how easy it was, walking through the dark with a vampire right beside me. It didnt feel unsafe, or even uncomfortable, really. It felt like walking next to anybody. Well, anybody who smelled bad. There was a movement in the brush at the edge of the big lawn, and then a low whimper. Seth shrugged through the ferns and loped over to us.Hey, kid, I muttered. He dipped his head, and I patted his shoulder.Sall cool, I lied. Ill tell you about it later. Sorry to take off on you like that.He grinned at me.Hey, tell your sister to back off now, okay? Enough.Seth nodded once.I shoved against his shoulder this time. Get back to work. Ill spell you in a bit.Seth leaned against me, shoving back, and then he galloped into the trees. He has one of the purest, sincerest, kindest minds Ive ever heard, Edward murmured when he was outof s ight. Youre lucky to have his thoughts to share.I know that, grunted. We started toward the house, and both of our heads snapped up when we heard the sound of someone suction through a straw. Edward was in a zip then.He darted up the porch stairs and was gone.Bella, love, Ithought you were sleeping, I heard him say. Im sorry, I wouldnt have left.Dont worry. Ijust got so thirsty it woke me up.Its a good thing Carlisle is bringing more. This kid is going to need it when he gets out of me.True. Thats a good point.I wonder if hell want anything else, she mused.I suppose well find out.I walked through the door.Alice said, Finally, and Bellas eyes flashed to me. That infuriating, irresistible smile broke across her face for one second. Then it faltered, and her face fell. Her lips puckered, like she was trying not to cry.I wanted to punch Leah right in her stupid mouth.Hey, Bells, Isaid quickly. How ya doing?Im fine, she said.Big day today, huh? Lots of new stuff. You dont have to do tha t, Jacob.Dont know what youre talking about, I said, going to sit on the arm of the sofa by her head. Edward had the floor there already. She gave me a reproachful look. Im so s she started to say.I pinched her lips together between my thumb and finger.Jake, she mumbled, trying to pull my hand away. Her attempt was so weak it was hard to believe that she was really trying.I shook my head. You can talk when youre not being stupid. very well,I wont say it, it sounded like she mumbled.I pulled my hand away.Sorry she finished quickly, and then grinned.I rolledmy eyes and then smiled back at her. When I stared into her eyes, I saw everything that Id been looking for in the park.Tomorrow, shed be someone else. But hopefully alive, and that was what counted, right? Shed look at me with the same eyes, sort of. Smile with the same lips, almost. Shed still know me better than anyone who didnt havefull access to the inside of my head.Leah might be an interesting companion, maybe even a true fr iend someone who would stand up for me. Butshe wasnt my best friend the way thatBella was. Aside from the impossible love I felt for Bella, there was also that other bond, and it ran bone deep.Tomorrow, shed be my enemy. Or shed be myally. And, apparently, that distinction was up to me.I sighed.FineI thought, giving up the very suffer thing i had to give. It made me feel hollow. Go ahead. Save her. As Ephraims heir, you have my permission, my word, that this will not violate the treaty. The others will just have to deuced me. You were right they cant deny that its my right to agree to this.Thank you. Edwards whisper was low enough that Bella didnt hear anything. But the words were so fervent that, from the corner of my eye, I saw the other vampires turning to stare. So,Bella asked, working to be casual. How was your day?Great. Went for a drive. Hung out in the park.Sounds nice.Sure, sure.Suddenly, she made a face. Rose? she asked.I heard Blondie chuckle. Again?I think Ive drunk t wo gallons in the last hour, Bella explained.Edward and I both got out of the way while Rosalie came to lift Bella from the couch and take her to the bathroom. brook I walk? Bella asked. My legs are so stiff. Are you sure? Edward asked.Rosellcatch me if I trip over my feet.
